2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Clear light amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall just off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, honey, grass and a lot of hay noticeable - not too many other belgian tripel type smells, but that perhaps is because this is from france. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty backbone with a lot of rich deep flavours, honey, grass, hay and some relatively strong caster sugar taste as well. Aftertaste shows a strong funky cardboardie malt characteristic, no hops at all, no depth or complexity and just a funky fake sweetness from honey. Overall, not really worth trying, but since it was the first time I ever saw this beer and I was on the other side of the world (from both this and my home), I decided to try it, and I’m glad I had it here and didn’t bring it back home from HK or France! I sampled this 33 cL stubby bottle purchased from City’Super! In Harbour City, Kowloon, Hong Kong on 02-July-2014 for HK$25,00 sampled in my hotel room back on Wan Chai, Hong Kong on 02-July-2014.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
330 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in Time Square, Causeway Bay.
Clear golden orange colour with no yeast sediments; Half finger head and crumpety off-white foam which fades in 40 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing and quite fizzy carbonation; Slightly fragrant aroma of full malt, with light caramel, molasses, sugar, faint peaches, bread, dough and strong yeast; Close to medium sweet taste of full malt, with caramel, light wet cardboard, molasses notes, sugar, thick bread, dough, strong yeast, thin lemon, moderate bitter hops, and very light grass; Medium body. Quite dry, thick and oily palate; Mouth feel is like a pumped-up Ch’Ti Blonde: the basic Lager-ish taste is still intact, the body becomes thick and oily, but less maltier due to jacked-up booze. The yeast, while strong, does not show much Belgian influence - no fruity / floral ester nor clove / spices - just malty molasses and adjunct sugars. Booze is hidden, lighter breadyness and still low hops. Boring BdG… Hoppiness is no aroma, light lemon and very low grassy hops in taste. Bitterness is slightly stronger than Ch’Ti Blonde but still low-fi for an abrupt, sweet-bitter finish; Fairly dry after taste. Oily and sweet to mouth.
Comments: There’s no way this one is an Abbey Tripel. It’s just Ch’Ti Blonde got boozed up and in the process, lost quite a lot of the latter’s neat malty and bready characters. The end result here is oily, sweet, sluggish BdG devoid of aroma and taste, and even more emptier than Ch’Ti Blonde. Really boring and no thanks!

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. A clear one, with a dense white head of moderate size. Some alcohol in the aroma, with sugary malts and a generic fruityness. Pine cone notes. It’s quite dry on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation level. Fruits, white sugar notes, a fine bitterness and some spiced, peppery notes in the flavor. Lasting fruity finish with a nice bitterness. A pretty nice one, although not up there with the best. 140510

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Couleur blanche trouble. Bonne mousse blanche. Nez malté. Gout assez leger de malt, petite amertume. Bonne petillance. Plutot une triple qu’une bière de garde.
