3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 softale (188) - Michigan, USA - OCT 3, 2002
Very murky brown color. Not too bad, but cork came out with just a small ’pop’ and 02/96 was printed on the side. So this one was quite old and flat. aroma is sweetly malty and taste is much the same with some very ripe fruit notes as well. I would like to get a little fresher sample and re-rate because I’m sure this could be better.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2003 Hazy rusty colored, deep red-orange. Frothy head. Sweet, caramel, dark malty aroma. Flavor is also sweet and fruity, some bready flavors as well. There are some herbal hoppy flavors and spices in the middle, and the soft finish is largely sweet. Slightly sugary malt and vanilla aftertaste. Medium body and creamy mouthfeel. Fair to middling complexity. This was a nice discovery.

A thicker, Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Flavorful malts and a dark cloudy copper color belie its true intent. It’s sweet, in an alcoholic Belgian way. Good.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - MAR 18, 2002
UPDATED: MAY 23, 2004 2002: Belgian dubbel-type appearance; ruddy red-brown, large head that quickly diminishes. Nose yeasty, molasses and slightly alcoholic. Flavor sweet but with a nice bite, very yeasty and doughy, very 'heavy.' Very nice finish, drier than you would expect. Good solid meat-and-potatos type beer. 7/4/8/4/15
2004: Dark, opalescent honey, creamy decaying head. Honey, berries, fruit, sweet malt and lots of yeast in the nose. Peppery, yeasty, fairly dry flavor, though some fruitiness is evident in the front...lovely creamy, thick mouthfeel, dry but vinous finish, like an older heavy white Bordeaux. Seems I'm rating this one high, but I just absolutely love this style and this is a solid if unspectacular example.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 heykevin (1269) - Decorah, Iowa, USA - DEC 7, 2001
Attractive amber color with nice head. Initially there is tons of belgian candi sugar aroma but that fades. Flavor is quite nice with good hop bitterness to balance the sweetness in malt. As this warms up it gets sweeter with pear notes developing. Quite tasty.

I drank the whole fricken bottle myself after my friend backed out after the first sip so I’ve got something to say about it here. It’s a dark amber with a sweet malty aromas of molasses, gingerbread and raisins. The aromas find some depth in the sweet textured malts. The finish is a rounded sour bitter but hardly balances the heavy, sweet body.
