COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Announcing the first ever collaboration beer from a French Craft brewery, Brassserie Castelain of Benifontaine France and Two Brothers of Warrenville, Illinois. The name Diversey & Lille is a riff on Chicago’s first brewery, Diversey & Lill (a Franco-American collaboration that dates back to 1833) and Lille (the capital of the North of France and a city near the Castelain brewery).

The nose of this dry hopped Biere de Garde sparkles with notes of citrus grass and apricot. Flavors of ripe fruit spices and toasted almond round out this slightly sweet, full beer. We are very excited to introduce it to the nation at large and most especially to Chicagoans. For the first time since 1871, Chicago has a beer called Diversey & Lill(e).

The beer was brewed in Benifontaine and is a collaboration between Nicholas Castelain and Jason Ebel.

Draft at Eulogy. Clear medium dark amber pour with a pillowy head. Lots of lace. Not much aroma. Gentle sweet burnt sugar malt flavors. Barley clear toys. Smooth gentle malt notes. Creamy finish. Some bitter throughout for balance but mostly a subtle sweet light vanilla bourbon caramel brown. Worth trying but not exceptional.

Not bad, not good, completely meh. Nothing defineable about it. Expected more funk, malt complexity.

Brownish orange pour from bottle. A malty essence and some choppy floral notes. Pretty decent.

Just after telling my friends no American breweries were brewing Biere de garde, here’s this one. adequate but lacking some of the floral/spice notes of the French style. Medium amber with small beige head, malt, spice, meadow. Something missing.

Gamey sweetbread and toffee aroma. Golden glowing orange with a film head. Semi-sweet caramel and salty metallic iron tastes. Doesn’t feel as strong or heavy as these things often are, although it is pretty sticky. Good brew but better more substantial versions are available for much less.

FROM NOTES: August 27, ’12. Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. A: Sweet malts, fruit notes, caramel/toffee, bread, spice, and a little bit of booze. A: Pours a clear reddish-orange color with a lasting beige head that dissipates into medium lace. T: Sweet flavor with fruit notes and an unbalanced, very strong malty backbone. Something is "off" in the aftertaste.... P: Medium body with appropriate carbonation. O: I wanted more from this collaboration. It is very underwhelming and a bit to sweet.

No bottling information.
Appearance: The color is amber to copper hued with garnet hints, accompanied by a tall and dense tan head that has good retention.
Aroma: The aroma is malty with a musky basement aroma with aromas of fig and hints of spice. It smells like a barleywine actually, one that’s been aged.
Taste: This drinks malty and musky with figs and hints of peppery spice, like an aged barleywine. Pretty bland with a slight watery finish.
Palate: Light to medium bodied with high carbonation.
Overall: Maybe this is past it’s prime, but to be fair the style pretty much translates to "beer for keeping" and this can’t be that old. This is bland and musky, not something I would buy again.

Bottle. Pours a reddish orange color with white head. Hay, caramel, slight syrupy and alcohol aromas. Syrupy malt extract flavor, also some bread and straw flavors. I have no clue where I picked up this brew, but I love trying biere de gardes.

bottle from saveur-biere. Hazy amber-golden colour, tall white head. Fruity aroma. Medium- to full-bodied, malty base with hints of honey and a shy fruity sourness, some of good and aromatic hops that add more fruit and a touch of resine.
