Announcing the first ever collaboration beer from a French Craft brewery, Brassserie Castelain of Benifontaine France and Two Brothers of Warrenville, Illinois. The name Diversey & Lille is a riff on Chicago’s first brewery, Diversey & Lill (a Franco-American collaboration that dates back to 1833) and Lille (the capital of the North of France and a city near the Castelain brewery).

The nose of this dry hopped Biere de Garde sparkles with notes of citrus grass and apricot. Flavors of ripe fruit spices and toasted almond round out this slightly sweet, full beer. We are very excited to introduce it to the nation at large and most especially to Chicagoans. For the first time since 1871, Chicago has a beer called Diversey & Lill(e).

The beer was brewed in Benifontaine and is a collaboration between Nicholas Castelain and Jason Ebel.

Draft at Jerry’s. Darker copper with good, foamy, beige head / Muted, sweet nose of burnt sugar, honey, raisins, and cooked fruit / Medium body, very sweet and lightly syrupy, with modest but decent hopping, and good, lightly bitter finish / Flavors of spun sugar, honey, and toffee, with cooked apricot and orange notes / A little overly sweet but enjoyable, although probably moreso in autumn.

Bottle to tulip. Gorgeous amber color with a garnet hue. One finger cream colored head lasts a while and then reduces to a sticky lace on the glass. Big sweet aroma with white grape juice, sweet tea, and shortbread. The taste has some golden brown sugar sweetness and biscuit malt, but the hop bitterness is pronounced and keeps the brew from being cloying. Its a blend of English bitter hops and aromatic american varieties. I was suspect about letting this beer sit around but as the name implies, it is suitable for aging. I believe that in time the flavors will meld together into a very special elixir. I may have to pick up another to rest for 18 months or so.

Light copper, clear, off-white head. Malty, with some bread-crust Munich malt notes, a little toffee, some earthy/cellar Bierde de garde-like character, clean. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. This is a good Biere de garde. It is malt forward with caramel and slight toffee, there is a lager musty quality. There is a firm bitterness in finish. A solid beer.

Pours a dark golden copper color with apricot colored edges and a two finger, fluffy off-white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Slightly earthy aroma with a decent balance of floral hops, bready yeast, sweet malts and dark fruit. Slightly grassy and resinous with some sticky pine needle and straw character followed by hints of bready ale yeast, caramel, toffee and biscuit. As it warms, there’s some dark fruit sweetness with dark cherry, apricot and plum. Medium bodied and surprisingly hop forward with some dry, earthy bitterness that lingers over the yeast and sweet malt notes into a slightly dry finish. There’s a prominent floral, grassy hop presence up front but it’s still light and easy to drink with some caramel, chestnut, toffee and dark fruit sweetness balancing things out. Nothing too out of the ordinary but this beer is pretty flavorful and nicely balanced with the hop profile adding another dimension that’s often missing in this style.

Bottle to a duvel tulip. Pours a clear copper amber with 2 fingers of frothy off white head and decent lacing. Aroma is of caramel, bread, almond, cherries, and faint pine. Taste is very nutty up front. It gives way to vanilla, caramel, toffee, and more breadiness. Thin mouthfeel and easy to drink. Pretty good.
