Pale golden in colour with good clarity and a low white head. Hoppy to the nose. Flavour is dominated all the way through by hop bitterness (half pint on gravity served in perfect condition at The Fat Cat in Ipswich 22.09.2006).

One of my favourite bitters, beautifully served in the Victoria in Nottingham near to where it’s brewed. Very light, hoppy, lovely pale yellow appearance.

A Mes rate: Cask at the Head of Steam. Hoppy and refreshing. Not usually my style but occasionally I quite enjoy something along these lines and this is one of them. Dusty tobacco and lots of grapefruit with a crisp, dry and sadly swift finish. Not bad.

Cask, handpump @ the Rook & Gaskill Inn, York, Nth Yorkshire.
Wow, this was a stand alone beer. Definitely comes to life in a very unique way flavour-wise, especially as far as ’Golden’ cask ales go. Poured a very, very pale, lemony yellow, bright, with a dullish looking pad of whipped cream that left some firm lacing. Grass, vine clippings and zesty oranges and limes tickle the nose with vigour showing also just a light touch of summer grains that come in late. In the mouth its undeniably fruity and tart. Big chunks of ripe oranges, grapefruit, limes and sour lemon make themself at home on the tongue and really get active. Very little malt is showing, just a breath of pale grain comes through for depth late into drinking. Light touch of acidity and an almost wine-like back end drops off to clean, fresh fruits in the swallow. This was quite an intensely flavoured real ale, even alongside the stouts I tasted the same day. I really liked it. Different, refreshing and well made. Cheers!!!

Very refreshing. Certainly worth tracking down. Apparently it was the National Society of Independent Brewers Champion Bitter in 2004
