Brewed to the traditional East Midlands style. Mid-brown / reddish easy drinking full flavoured best bitter is well rounded with some residual sweetness which is balanced with a resinous hop character. A hugely popular beer that deserves to be savoured!

Golden brown with an oily film topping. Woody with a good malt and hop balance and some nice fruitiness in the finish. Delicate but pleasing aged character to the aroma. Straight forward but very enjoyable.

Couple of pints at the Cluny, Newcastle. Red brown, off white head, cold tea aroma. Nice balance of hop and malt, nothing spectular, but satisfying and enjoyable.

Cask@GBBF2011. (heavy encryption on beer name). Amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is caramel, mild nuttyness, some resiny notes as well as wood and some mild floral bitterness. Flavour is being quite similar with a quite pleasant nutty and floral finish. Also quite dry palate in the finish.

Cask (gravity dispense) at Chelmsford Beer Festival on 15 July 2011. Very surprised to find I hadn’t reviewed this before. Orange / copper colour. Excellent condition. A decent standard best bitter. More malt than hop in evidence. Some caramel. Clean enough but a touch grainy for my taste. Fine, but there are more exciting beers in the Castle Rock stable.

Cask - Alexandra Hotel, Derby. Poured clear copper with a lasting small white head. Nutty, toasty/roasty aromas, a hint of yeast in there, mid fruits and caramel. Roasty on the palate, almost choccy with rounded bittersweet malts. Also a mild background yeasty tang. Light to medium body & carbonation with a short to medium length finish.
