Cask, Leicester 09. Notes say ’Sand Piper’ but I’m no twitcher. Headless ink. Sweet unusual Caramac, cask and white wine fruitiness aroma; odd but you get used to it. This beer baffled my palate. Orange, clove and dry burnt cocoa bittersweetness. Burnt and unusual, with some spiritous, Tia-Maria-like alcohol showing. Too sweet, with an oddly christmassy feel I can’t pinpoint. Spiced, primed or just weird? Jury’s out. Enjoyable.

Cask conditioned handpump Merchants Inn Rugby A black beer with an off-white coloured head. The aroma has plenty of dusty chocolate which carries through to the mouth. Feels like it needs a stir. Sweet and ultra chocolatey.

Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Pumpclip definitely says Sand Martin and adds that this is another Castle Rock beer that supports the Wildlife Trust. Near black with a beige head. Sweet milk chocolate of cocoa aroma. Slight sourness in the taste, but chocolate is the dominant feature. Very slight dryness. Quite good.
