Straight out of the barrel, The Merchant, Rugby. Headless inky measure way over a pint. Impressively burnt stout with coffeeish and bitter chocolate touches but above all, smoke. Bitterly roasty and high cocoa. Robust and smoky stout.

A Mes rate: Cask at the Pembury.
Totally black and opaque with a slim tan head. Awesome aroma. Fruit, rubber, roasted malt and heavy chocolate. Flavour is the same but what a finish! Stunning roasty start that turns to coffee as it develops eventually leaving a lingering toasty note. Fantastic length. An excellent stout.

Cask handpull at Pembury Tavern, London. Beer of the festival for me. Black with ruby edges, lasting tan head. Good roasty nose. Some charcoal, liquorice. Nice choc. Somewhere between a dark mild and a porter.
