kwoeltje (1199), Manchester, Missouri, USA Aug 20, 2007 (draught at the brewery) I’m rating the XXX version, which is supposedly only available at the brewery - not sure how it differs from the XXXX. Nice copper color with small white head and some lace. Mild malt aroma. Flavor is mild caramel malt. thehipone (197), Australia Oct 30, 2005 Looks good, unfortunately the taste doesnt back it up. Nice fluffy white head on top of a rich amber color body. Not enough malt to back up the hops. I’m pretty sure the dreaded pride of ringwood makes an appearance here. It is pretty heavily hopped with these metallic bastards, giving it that nasty, fake, chemically bitter finish. bluevegie (1732), Perth, Australia Sep 10, 2004 Compact mainly lasting off-white head on a coppery bronze coloured body. Caramel, nutty, hoppy taste - good but I couldn’t have a session if I was just drinking these. Dredd (348), Ormond, Australia Apr 20, 2004 This is a surprise, after hearing how truly awful Castlemaine beers are, this turns out to be quite drinkable. The easiest beer to compare this against is the James Squire amber ale (bit of a coincidence that they are both lion nathan beers). There is some nice caramel and malt flavours that are just thick enough not to be watery and not too strong to be sticky sweet. The aroma and bitterness are a tad weak but at $8.50 per 6 pack it is great value. Winefly (60), KEW, Australia Feb 25, 2004 not as bad as the gold, but still overdone in the carbonation department. Too many chemicals in this one I think. Its ok if your very drunk!
