Tap. Dark brown, near balck with a foamy brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, smoke, pine, light chocolate and dark fruit. Flavor is chocolate, raisins, roasted malt and smoke. Medium bodied with a dry finish. Slightly bitter.

Tap @ Lakewood. Jet black pour. Light brown lacing. Charcoal aroma. Smoke up front with undertones of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and nice malty bitterness. Really nicely done and doesn’t overwhelm you with smoke.

On tap at C2. Black with a light brown head, mostly dissipating, light lacing. Smoky, light spicy aroma with roasted malts, Similar flavor, pretty smooth and creamy with a medium body and a malty finish.

Black pour with a thin tan head. Nose of dark roasty licorice and a smokey black malt bitterness. Flavor is roughly the same with bitter roasted black malts, smokiness, a little roasty licorice and chocolate sweetness, and a certain smoky acrid finish. Hard to drink after a couple of sips.

On tap at Caution poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of smoke, roasted malt, earthiness and asphalt. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of smoke, roasted malt, earthiness and asphalt with a smooth dry lingering smokey finish.

Blind tasting. Pours opaque with a medium, frothy brown head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is heavy beechwood, cherry smoked malt, roast and a meaty character, light hops, and dark fruity esters. Flavor is heavy smoke, roasted malt, meaty (mmm... bacon), light hops and bitterness, dark fruity esters and a dry finish; vinous notes late. Full body and medium warmth.

draft at Denver Bicycle Cafe. strong peat in the nose, stronger than smoke and overwhelming any other malt. licorice, peat, char and bitter chocolate play around a bit. medium body; limp and goopy.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2012 (Had again atthe brewery today - seemed much more sweet, syrupy - smoke seemed much more like burnt wood - much less enjoyable than I remember) Tap at Denver Bicycle Cafe - black pour, with a this, tan head - nose is very smokey and meaty, with notes of anise, leather, char/wood - fairly creamy mouthfeel - quite sweet, with notes of vanilla and chocolate - balancing flavors of lint smoke and dark malt bitterness - the smoke character tastes more like a phenol than something from the malt - finish is a bit spicy, with bittersweet chocolate - interesting and hearty brew.
