Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours pitch black with a small, dense lightly tanned head leaving some solid lacing. Head stays for the duration. Nose takes a little while to come out and is a touch subdued. Some sweet, bitter cocoa, biscuit, a touch of ash and espresso. Taste is very coffee forward with a lot of bitterness through the palate. Dark chocolate adds to the beer to give it a slight mocha tone throughout. Charred malts play a big role. Palate is soft with light carbonation. Easy drinking for a 10% brew. Tasty stuff

Black body with short tan head. Mainly coffee on the nose, roasted bitterness in the taste and thin enough to probably drink plenty.

Bottle, 14C. Bottle says 9% ABV. Black with a large tan head that lasts and laces pretty well. Aroma of coffee, roasted barley, under-ripe berries. Taste is surprisingly unlike the aroma, apart from coffee: chocolate fudge, coffee, orange blossoms, some pine. Slightly syrupy, but not all that heavy. Dry, somewhat powdery finish, bitterness creeps up a bit. A lot to like about this, but the aroma didn’t really lead me into the beer.

ALLOVATE (2724) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 29, 2015
A gift from a friend a long time back. These are now released in 50cL bottles at 100% ABV, so the 75cL must be 2013 or earlier. At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Black as midnight with a thick mocha foam that holds and daubs a messy lace. Nose hints at Ovaltine, tar, blackstrap molasses, leather and leavened brown bread. On the palate it cedes a little evidence of oxidation having a sherry flavour underlie the mish mash of nuances coming through. Balsamic vinegar and kecap manis notes give it a sharpness whilst some roasted malt, cigarette ash and charred wood offer depth and length. The body is hefty yet the mouthfeel is a little rough. Quite yeasty with bitter, nutty chocolate mid-palate. Not shy about the 9.0% which hasn’t softened at all but it adds to the complexity. Not in your face in any way but a grand and complex brew overall. Lovely! (75cL, 9.0% ABV, no date stamp, gift from friend)

Pours black with a large dark tan head. Nose shows cocoa, roasted barley, coffee and some spicy noble hops. Flavours include cocoa, ash, roasted barley, sweet malt, liquorice. Nice bittersweet finish. Carbonation could be higher.

On tap at Dejavu. Full marks. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, caramel, with a touch of liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, never ending. Palate is creamy, and full bodied. Black, with a frothy, off-white head.

330mL bottle from Slowbeer 2015 vintage Pitch black, thick looking, pours a big brown head, persists as a dense creamy collar. Aroma quite rich - burnt nutty malts, dark sugars/molasses, dark roast coffee, cocoa, hints of vinous/dried fruits in the mix. Full bodied, rich without being cloying or too thick, creamy carbonation, good length, Plenty of chocolate pudding, rich caramels, espresso, bitter chocolate, raisins, touch of earthy woodiness. Long dry finish, big bitterness. Rather tasty stuff, not as big as expected for a 10%er
