"A true seasonal beer, as refreshing as it should be! Taste it in the summer, sitting at a terrace table … " Originally, season beer was a beer brewed before the summer and intended for summer-season farmhands. It had low alcohol content and a marked bitterness that made it really refreshing. We wanted to offer a truly seasonal Season with production limited in time. As Laurent Agache’s

Een heel lekker saison zoals het hoort te zijn. Een aanrader om eens uit te proberen

Elderberry-flowered saison with rocky, yellowish white head and murky ochre colour. Aroma does reveal the typical fragrance of elderberry flowers (not uncommonly used in Belgian beers and liqueurs), except from bread, wheat, vanilla, jute, dried apricots, orange peel... Dried fruit in the onset, green apple, subdued citrus touch and equally subdued malt sweetness, bit bready but otherwise rather neutral, finish flowery and grassy, nothing really bitter, primarily malty and bit bready. Knowing this brewery’s style and being an amateur of the old saison style, I expected more from this.

A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a fat-three-finger thick, pale tan colored head that quickly overflows the rim of my glass and has me sucking foam as I try and get to the sink; definitely overly carbonated. The beer is a straw gold color that shows a clear, bright, yellow-tinged, golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma has an herbal, lightly tart, sort of lemon zest leaning, yet earthy, dried hay like, wheat cracker tinged, lightly spicy character to it. There is a spicy, grassy, herbal character to the beer that seems quite distinct, and it adds a nice bite to the aroma. The finish has soft fruit notes of pear, and a bit of green apple, and perhaps some star-fruit like character. The yeast character provides a soft, sort of musty like not to the nose, there is touches of clove, and some general spiciness as well.

Effervescent and lively as it first hits the tongue, this initially hides a sweet, pale maltiness and lightly viscous texture that comes out as the beer rolls across the palate. The finish has a light bitterness to it, a touch of lemon zest, as well as an herbal, sort of green, lingering character to it that lightly spices things up. Light clove notes accentuate the sweetness here, and there is a green, peppery note to this beer as well. As the beer warms up the herbal character gets a bit more pronounced; it takes on a bell pepper like note that is a bit green and grassy. There is an interesting viscosity to this beer that masks the excessive carbonation that a new pour brings to this beer. There seems to be a touch of mint-toothpaste like flavor here as the beer warms up as well.

I am enjoying the herbal character that is in this beer, but my wife doesn’t really care for it; so take that as a warning as perceptions of this beer due to the elderflowers might be skewed.

Bottled, 330ml at Den Engel, Leek, Staffs. Clouded gold with white head. There is a sharp lemony hint right from the start with this beer, quite dry and flowery, possibly elderflower methinks, now I know. Lasting tartness, a touch of acidity. Very pleasant.

On tap, 25cL. @Festival_de_Namur. Always love this landscape in a beer : orange on top to yellow on the bottom, opaque. Foamy white head. Good persistence. Spicy aroma, herbs, smoke, light fruit (lemon). Medium dry bitter, light sweet. Good balance. Medium body, light texture, average to fizzy carbonation, bitter finish with a sweet note. Overall, a good saison : easy to drink, refreshing, nice hops.

Light hay. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Finishes with light bitterness. Not much floral hops. Tap at Churchkey.

Visual: Pours a lovely clear bright golden yellow with a largish super foamy lasting head, thick sticky lacing, a nice thick layer of retention, abundant clusters of fast activity. A beautiful sight. Nose: Sour citrus wheat malts, barnyard. (lvl-5)-pungency Attack: crisp malty, almost salty Mid-palate: creamy smooth, some fizziness, (lvl-4)-sweetness, light-medium sourness, (MAIN) wheat malts, elderflower, lemon citrus, lager sweetness Finish: excellent bitter hopped transition, grainy sweet wheat finish. Summary: Drinks like a very nice creamy textured sweet lager with a bit more hop character. Not at all the like your typical sour saison. Very drinkable.

Bottled. Courtesy of bartlebier. Reminiscence of bubble bath. Soapy, perfumy. Gushing? Thanks a lot bartlebier!

shared @ DE-CH-F TriStateTasting, with special thanks to bartlebier! Faint smell of elderflowers, mouthfeel a bit too foamy imho, taste is a bit fruity, a bit woody, a bit cellary, a bit floral.

Froral and hoppy (in the Belgian way) saison. Body is still dry and grassy, but the aroma hops and flowers make it more of a forest beer.
