Wow! Big shock for me as I just picked it up by chance and expected nothing. From the moment I poured it I knew it was going to be good. Great deep brown body and lovely fluffy cream coured head it just looked amazing. Typical raisin, prune, dark fruits, caramel, slight liquorice with a nice bitter finish. I dont get much spice which is fine after drinking Gouden Carolus NoŽl yesterday! This is a great Xmas beer.

Bottle to snifter. Looks solid; a semi-transparent brown with fluffy semi-transparent light beige lacing. Smells somewhat doughy, bitter, and yeasty. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Alright.

New Beer Distributors, NY 330ml ($5): Pours a rather dark brown with a small light brown head. Aroma is dark fruity, some yeast, and some burnt sugar. Taste has a slight hoppy undertone. Moderate amounts of sweetness, plenty of maltiness, and a healthy dosage of fruitiness. Body is low carb and medium. Not too bad.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours dark brown with a lacy, light tan head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel and light chocolate malts, plus a little dark fruit, and some floral hops. Flavor the same, with a nice blend of malts and yeast. Smooth texture. A pretty good Belgian beer.

From notes: Poured hazy, opaque reddish-brown with a small tan head. Aromas of cherry, orange, and some yeast. Medium-thick with a nice, full body. Flavor is nutty, with undertones of earthy yeast and sweet orange.

11.2 oz bottle, poured into a snifter. This is probably my first-ever Belgian christmas ale. Clear dark red color. Good thin khaki head. Nice lace. Enjoyable ale that is unique from the plethora of American winter brews, which are often just spice-bombs. This one has more subtle spice, but a nice complex dark fruit belgian -esque aroma thatís hard to describe. Maybe some licorice in there, dark toasty malts. Itís an interesting one to sip. Very dry texture (holds back the drinkability - but, itís supposed to be a sipper anyway), light soft carbonation. Nice light sweet spiced taste. Definitely a nice, unique winter ale - a breath of fresh air from the sea of all-too-similar American winter brews.

33cl bottle @ home. Hazy very dark brown color, full beige to light brown head. Smell malts, liquorice, raisin. Taste malts, caramel, toast, raisin, lightly alcohol. Medium carbo, medium body. Very decent beer.

Ar: Brown sugar and raisins - a bit of dark rum and toffee. Ap: Deep brown-red, hazy - small light tan head with moderate retention and a sudsy ring of lacing. T: Lots of dark fruit and brown sugar up front - raisins, toffee, and molasses - medium bitterness with a smooth warming alcohol, rum-like in flavor - deep malty, sugary, dark-fruit finish. P: Medium body with medium-high carbonation - finish is dry. O: Delicious dark Belgian ale - wonderful mixture of robust dark fruits and caramel/toffee flavors.
