COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big and friendly, our Brown Ale is as approachable as its inspiration—Cedric, George Vanderbilt’s beloved St. Bernard. Our deep russet-colored beer offers hints of caramel and roasted barley, with a nutty flavor produced by Victory™ malt. The crisp finish is marked by well-balanced hops.

Had this one bottled; thanks Chris! Outstanding brown ale, had a great, nutty, almost sweet maltiness that helped balance what was a mild, herby hoppiness. Smooth, milky finish. Outstanding example.

Not quite what I expected from a brown ale. Lighter colour and aroma than the norm. The nose was a little funky reminiscent of a French Farmhouse Ale. The taste was better than the aroma. Some medium roasted malt present balanced nicely with bitterness from the hops. Actually, it gets more flavorful as it warms.

16 ounce pint - $5.00 at Cedric’s Tavern at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

Appearance: Clear, brown body with a 1/3-inch head comprised of off-white foam. Thin lace sheets on the drop. Just a good, humble appearance.

Smell: Well, it certainly smells as one would expect a thoughtfully constructed brown ale to, with notes of slightly over-toasted bread, cocoa, dark caramel, and a hint of roast.

Taste: Brown maltiness of crushed toasted bread crusts, chocolate powder, maybe a bit of instant coffee. Lightly sweet. Small hint of fruitiness. Lightly earthy hops with enough bitterness to balance things out. More caramel developing late and upon warming. Dry, malty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: A pleasant-tasting, easy-drinking brown ale.

On draft at Cedric’s Tavern @ Biltmore. Light brown color with medium tan head. Aroma of caramel and floral. Taste is sweet with bitter finish from what I believe are cascade hops. Overall this was a pretty good brown ale.

Draft at Cedric’s Tavern. Pours dark brown with a thin brown head. Nice caramel maltiness on the nose. A little more subdued on the tongue. Finishes clean. Solid!

Dark amber, iced tea color pour, slight off-white head. Pretty much of a neutral aroma with some fresh lake water notes. Flavor has some caramel notes, a hint of black dirt, some English tea. Mouthfeel is slightly thin, but not a detractor. Birthday gift from my brother’s family - picked up at the Biltmore.

Red brown, just off white head. Aroma is dull, malty, sweet note. Taste is nutty, toast, bready, caramel, toffee.

Pours mahogany into the glass, with amber hues to the fringes. A substantive eggshell head ensues, reducing to a thin ring that leaves soapy lace. The nose is malty with some nuts, aerated sugars and slight legumes lingering about. Flavors are similar, some nuts and sweet malts (albeit light) transcend into a crisp nut-tea finish that lingers appropriately. This is definitely an English take on the Brown Ale, with the mouthfeel not nearly complex as its American counterparts. Tasty with a light body, this would make for a good session brew, as long as one is not looking for a lot of complexity of substance on the palate. I wouldn’t throw it out, and in the right circumstances, would look for it again.
