This mead showcases skill and exceptional ingredients combined to produce some of Alaska’s finest meads. Mead maker Mike Kiker sources first-flow, no-heat extracted honey for most of his meads. This mead uses raw basswood blossom honey that at its best is tricky to work with. He then combined it with organically grown Alaskan red currants cultivated on the southern slopes of the Talkeetna Mountain range, within view of Denali. When I tried this mead it was re-fermenting in the bottle, unintentional, but adding to the complexity. The basswood adds classic “rain-fresh” laundry aromas of cotton and woodiness married with rose petals and tart cherries from the currants. This mead was well carbonated creating a false perception of dryness on the palette. The hallmark of this mead is a near perfect balance of flavors, layered with equally balanced acidity and sweetness. A humble, complex, and very fun mead.
