Commercial Description:
Unfiltered in bottle and keg.
Pierre Celis created the original Hoegaarden beer in the early 1960’s. Interbrew-Labatt bought the brand and the brewery in the 1980's. Pierre Celis formed a new brewery in Austin Texas, brewing the same beer but under the brand name Celis White. Miller bought the Celis brewery and the Celis White brand-name in 1996. The brewery closed in 2000. In late 2002 Michigan Brewing bought the Celis White brand from Miller. Brouwerij Van Steenberge is now brewing the original Pierre Celis White under the brand-name Celis White in Europe and Ertveld's Wit in North America.

Thin white head, hazy yellow body. Powerful, dense spicy lemon aroma. Thin, watery oregano yeasty taste. Watery aftertaste. Well. Give me a Hoegaarden instead!

Bottle. Pours a hazy, straw yellow color with a foamy white head that disappeared somewhat quickly. Sweet and sour notes in the aroma, which also come through in the flavor. Not sure what to make of this beer. One mouthful I like it, the next I don’t. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the Celis White from Texas was much better.

Tap. Good and persistant head. A bit of citrus and vanilla. Pale golden in color. Overall a pretty good wheat beer. 22/12/06: Now also tried on bottle under the alias Mannekes Pies.

Aroma of popcorn and vanilla play with some hops. Taste is similar and lightly sweet, though thin and citrus does kick in a bit.

Sampled 25 cl bottle labeled: Gensch Mannekes Pies. Pretty weak citrus-dominated aroma. Slightly hazy pale yellow color. Fast disappearing head. Light body with medium strength citrusy aftertaste. Not unpleasant in any way - just uninteresting.

Cloudy yellow colour. Malty, cheesy aroma - though purists would argue this is not actually cheese but some vile plasticy crap that calls itself cheese. The French certainly wouldn’t call it cheese and I suspect the Belgians wouldn’t either. That kind of cheese. Not something I want to smell in a beer, to say the least. The body is tart and watery with only a hint of coriander and an accent of nutmeg. A shade of a wit, and evidence that without vigilant stewardship, legacies have no staying power.

This isn’t as good as I remember it about 10 (or more?) years ago. There was a beer festival under the Brooklyn Bridge around the same time Pierre was debuting his beers in American. I was taken by this beer then. Something has changed, I’m sure. Slight sulfur musty nose. Hazy pale orange color with a fluffy white head. Corriander notes with some banana amidst a thin wheat body. Dainty napkin dry end. Creamy mouth feel. Quick and refreshing.

Draught at Unicorn Scottish Pub (Brescia).
Compact foam and of good persistence. Yellow color pale. Little fizzy with a lean body. Little dense and evanescent.
