Unfiltered in bottle and keg.
Pierre Celis created the original Hoegaarden beer in the early 1960ís. Interbrew-Labatt bought the brand and the brewery in the 1980's. Pierre Celis formed a new brewery in Austin Texas, brewing the same beer but under the brand name Celis White. Miller bought the Celis brewery and the Celis White brand-name in 1996. The brewery closed in 2000. In late 2002 Michigan Brewing bought the Celis White brand from Miller. Brouwerij Van Steenberge is now brewing the original Pierre Celis White under the brand-name Celis White in Europe and Ertveld's Wit in North America.

This didnít last long, but I managed to save the final bottle for review. This 12 ounce bottle has no freshness date, alas. Nevertheless, into my lovely Tripel Karmeliet glass it goes! A. Purty! Huge, 3 inch white head is quite foamy and dies quick, leaving tons of succulent looking white lace... could hardly ask for better. The beer itself is a mildly unfiltered dull, bubbly yellow. S. Bold. Really reminds me of La Fin Du Monde, minus that Unibroue yeast... loads of wheat, lemon, coriander, crisp honey-apple sweetness and just a hint of pepper. Classic and tight, nothing wrong here at all. Maybe a touch too sharp? But thatís quibbling. F. Classic Witbier here - honestly one of the best Iíve had from any country. Starts off thin (refreshing) and crisp, but not too sharp - the wheat softens it I think. Then a rush of gentle, yet insistent sweetness, tempered by a good dose of lemon-orange spritz. It is important to note that this is not really sour per se, nor acidic, but it does have that citrus and lingering sour finish. Otherwise, a good amount of coriander is present here, and a green apple ester (no apple sweetness) along with just a smudge of sulfur. The whole experience is drastically refreshing. M / O. The finish on Celis White is soft, with an extremely long, lingering lemon-esque note and some white bread dough. The carbonation is equally soft / light, I personally would prefer a bit more... but that said, one could hardly ask for a better Belgian-style summer beer. This is both to style and excellent, and right up there with Allagash White for contention as the best Belgian Wit Iíve had out of my home country. In fact I feel like I prefer this to Allagash... guess Iíd better acquire some more and find out, huh?

Bottle from Beerhawk. Light and easy to drink - I found this to be a sweeter Hoegaarden, and not as good as the íoriginalí. Pleasant enough but Iíd drink Hoegaarden instead.

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel, Belgium. The beer is hazy yellow colored and has a small and stable white head, with average carbonation. The aroma is yeast, a lot of spices (coriander like) and citrus notes (oranges and a little lemon). The taste is medium bodied and a little creamy. Nices notes of oranges and a nice spicy bitterness in the end. The finish is dry and a little spicy bitterness.

The aroma is full of hops, citrus, wheat and malt. The color is pale golden. The taste is full of hops, citrus, sugar, wheat and malt. A really nice beer. Very reminiscent of Hoegaarden but itís the same brewer so it makes good sense. Targeted for the American market.
