Bleddyn ap Cynfyn was ruler of Gwynedd and Powys and probably of Ceredigion and Brycheiniog as well, and undoubtedly the most powerful Welsh king. After his death in 1075, his sons were too young to rule, and his dominions passed into the hands of a cousin Trahaern ap Caradog. This delicious pale strong ale has an original gravity of 1075 with a high mash temperature leaving a fine full bodied texture. Generous US and New Zealand variety hopping gives a very bitter tongue, which is complemented by a crisp sweetness and a delicious citrus and grapefruit aroma.

Cask conditioned at Harbury Beer Festival ’14. Hazy amber with white head. This is all about the hops, lots of drying, pithy grapefruity flavours, skinny then a dry plummy alcohol flavour. Nasal alcohol too. A little one sided but pretty good all the same.

Cask at The Metropolitan (W’Spoons), Baker Street, London. An amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, tropical fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, grapefruit, some pine and really quite bitter. This was decent but the bitterness needs dialling down somewhat for me.

Cask hand pull at The County Hotel Ashford. Clear amber lasting beige head. Hoppy aroma. Decent condition. Burst of grapefruit hop in the mouth. Wow that’s really quite hoppy. Not perfect but slap me on the bum and call me Sally it’s hoppy. Hop juice. Worth a pint after the half I bought

Hand pulled cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW) Watford. Stunning strong ale which tastes nearer to 7.2% than the 5.6% printed on the pump clip! Wonderful resinous New World tropical hop flavours and Welsh origin conflict with our style description of ’English Strong Ale’! WTF - in this condition and under 3 quid a pint, this is a great beer in any category.
