The angry uncle of Pocahoptas. This one time beer is a result of being our first brew on the system. A little off here, short some water there, and we are left with a double IPA very similar to Pocahoptas, but much stronger. the Richard is an unfiltered West Coast-style Double IPA clocking in at 8.3% ABV and 72 IBUs.

Tap. Not so much a one time thing... Pours clear orange, small off white head, a bit of lacing. Aroma is very light, mostly caramel. Flavor is orange, pine, caramel, medium sweet, medium bitter. Medium body, some ABV heat. Men for a dipa.

Keg @ COTU. The pour’s amber with a small head. Cantaloupe and lemon fruit salad nose. More dank, some underarm. A bit of caramel and donut. The taste is similar. Big assertive tropical fruits and PNW woody bitterness. Caramel, bread. Medium body, fine carbonation. Nice.

Draft at the brewery. Another thin-looking amber offering. This carries a heavy metallic edge, like licking out a copper kettle. It does have a floral flourish, but is mashy instead of malty, missing some backbone. (#4924, 1/19/2013)

Served on draft at the brewery. Pours a clear bronze color with a large creamy white head. Fair head retention. Aroma of herbal, resin, piney hops, pale malts. The taste is bitter herbal, resin, pine and citrus hops. Medium-full bodied. Lingering bitterness. Drinks like a DIPA.

Draft at the brewery. Medium orange amber, clear, nice head. Aroma is a nice shot of hops - somewhat rough pine and pineapple citrus. Flavor is some nice biscuit malts, followed again by a shot of hops that matches the nose. Hop accented for sure, but enough malt backbone to keep things together. This is a big beer, definitely teetering on the border of, but not quite into, today’s world of IIPA’s. I really liked this one, this beer had some personality.

Draft at the source. Deep clear amber color, thin white edge head. Aroma of tropical fruit and grass. Taste starts malty, but decent bitterness and balance. This beer will apparently evolve into "Pocahopus."

Draft at the brewery - second day open. This was by far the best of the 4 offerings that they provided this weekend. Aroma was a nice solid pine one, with a bunch of needles in each inhale, light biscuit malt character to it. Flavor was fresh pine character with a moderately bitter character - nice malt balance to it. Alcohol isn’t necessarily present - but it starts to hit a bit at that point.

Draft at the brewery. Very piny, citrusy hop aroma. Taste is very hop-forward. Definitely a double IPA, not just a run of the mill IPA. Very fresh and balanced. Very drinkable.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2013 Draft This is new brewery in Ashland , VA or The Center of the Universe. This was opening night and the crowd was large and excited about a new brewery in Hanover County. There were 6 food trucks and plenty of tables. It was a cool evening and most people were inside. The beer was excellent. My first was their Pale Ale or Ray’s Ray. This is the IPA or The Richard. The aroma of pine or spruce hits your nose immediately. The medium body ale had a wonderful balance of bitterness and malts. The alcohol was higher than expected for their first batches but very deceptive. This will be a fun IPA to pick up in a growler and head out to the River.
