4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Draught at Brydens, Toronto, Sept 6 2013) Pours a very deep brownish ruby, clear with a small, short-lived off-white head that left a fair bit of lace. Aroma hits with fruity hops up front - tropical fruit/tree fruit character with some citrus, sweet, rich malt behind, some pine/earth bitterness as well for balance. Palate is reasonably rich at first, again with tropical fruit/citrus hops and a lot of sweet, complex malts and a chunk of pine resin bitterness. Mid-palate I thought the fruit character was more malt-driven, cherry/plum in addition to the tropical/peach from the hops, and the sweetness comes to the fore more. In the finish the bittering hops take over to cut that sweetness some and the aftertaste is not barleywine-big, with pine/citrus/malt still lingering a bit. Palate is fairly full and quite sticky, soft carbonation, booze is really well hidden with maybe just a slight dryness on the finish, but something made this very slow-sipping and heavy-hitting anyway. Really good though, complex malt character really well-paired with the hops, doesnít sit easily in any style and all the better for it.

On tap@ The Bent Elbow - puts a shimmering copper-red ale in the tulip with a small off white cap that laces the glass. Aroma is complex big in tropical/exotic fruits earthy pine notes, sweet malts - wonderful nose to it. Silken delivery but super robust.... the palate is deluged in lush tones of guava, papaya married to rich red malt sweet roastiness finish is slow and silky accented by increased bittering - very lush and satisfying. Making a single hop double red with the new Mosaic hop and Munich red malts was a stroke of genius. The Mosaic is a Simcoe offshoot...like Citra on steroids, but itís much more than that. Rich in Mango, lemon, citrus, earthy pine, tropical fruit, herbal and stone fruit notes....it gives this great red ale a triple whammy of hop presence in aroma, flavor and bittering and perfectly complements the malts chosen - I love this big red ale and I drink all I can get of it when it shows up - Iím hoping it is made available on a more frequent basis.

On Tap and a bottle from Flying Monkeys. Pours a deep deep clear red with a generous beige head that leave significant lace. Nose is caramel and pine and plums and cherry. Plenty of hop bitterness but balanced with a big malt backbone and a mixture of fruit notes. Body is medium to heavy and quite creamy with soft carbonation. Sampled this on tap at the brewery and had to bring a couple of bottles home.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of citrus fruits and a hint of plum. pours a deep ruby red with thin head, nice lacing. On the bitter side, but sweetness creeps up behind it and leaves an aftertaste of pine, lime, and rich malt.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Red brown pour with an off white head. Aroma has butterscotch, light roasted malt and a surprisingly good dose of brown banana. More banana in the flavour with burnt toast malt. Hops come in mid palate, and have a good profile, but then the banana creaminess lingers. Itís not terrible, but thereís definitely flaws.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Visual: Cool label. Pours beer bottle reddish-brown with no head, very thin ringed retention, a bit of lacing, some steady streams.
Nose: Papaya and hints of guava
Attack: 8/10 quickly fading brown sugar sweetness,
Mid-palate: papaya fruity malts, caramel, brown sugar
Finish: medium sourness, tangy, lingering grapefruit sharp bitter hop/med-heavy malted finish
Summary: Medium to full-bodied, quite balanced but weighs on the palate because it doesnít have any refreshing characteristics. The 9.5% abv is decently hidden.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2013 Rerate. Tap at Cíest What. Deep ruddy pour. Very fine cream-coloured lace. The nose is lovely - sweet toasty/chewy malt. A touch of caramel and stewed fruit along with some tropical fruit and citrus hop aromas. Intense hop flavour and aroma but the bitterness is quite restrained by the sweet malts. Approaches balance but is definitely assertive. Loads of flavour and warming really brings out some fruity tropical flavour. There is a touch of sticky sweetness on the finish with some notable hop resinousness also contributing. Really tasty beer.
Deep amber pour. Nose is juicy and citrusy. A bit of peach and pine. Loads of ethanol and some light fruit. Sweetish malt mid-palate along with some toffee. A touch of pepper and some light sticky sweetness. Moderate fruitiness and a bit of light tropical character. Lovely actually.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample at Picaroon's Brewer's Bash. Deep red colour. Aroma is strong hops with some full red ale malt behind it. Taste is powerful resin, with caramel and biscuit malt backing it up. Full body. Overall, while the two strong forces are balanced, the are almost too intense. This beer is experienced, but maybe not savoured.
