Mahogany in colour, this bourbon-barrel aged barley wine is crafted from fine barley malt exuding deep, rich notes of dried fruit, plum and candy with a walnut ester. Best enjoyed lightly chilled. Enjoy is now, or cellar for 5 years or more.

22 oz. bottle shared by b3shine. Pours dark brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor had sweet malts, caramel, brown sugar, dark fruits, there was a slight tart/funky/off bit like there was a hint of infection, wood, some barrel character, some warming and slightly boozy alcohol, this was solid enough especially when the slight off character disappeared.

ENG: 650ml 2013 Vintage bottle from Sherbrooke Store in Edmonton, aged since January 2015, poured into the Teku glass. Very dark brown color with red highlights, massive, creamy beige head and a nice lacing. Appearance for 5+. Aromas are pretty deep and sweet. Strongly nutty, mahogany, licoricey, toffee, maybe even more like a maple syrup. Some malty background. When stirred stronger, some kind of mead-like, or fortified-wine-like notes appears. Tastes very sweety too, even sticky, strongly caramelly, strongly roasty, oakey, dried plums and a bit smokey (but just perfectly balanced). Bourbon barrel notes are, I think, very perceptible especially in the aftertaste. Very oily texture, a bit carbonized - but just slightly, with full body, it gives you an amazing impression. Overall it might be a bit too sweet, but that’s just my taste. Anyways the brew is very complex with nice creaminess and full mouthfeel. With it’s 11.5% abv you can barely feel the alcohol in it. Very smooth brew.

PL: Butelka 650ml z serii 2013 Vintage, kupiona w Sherbrooke Store w Edmonton, leżakowana od stycznia 2015, przelana do Teku. Brunatna barwa z czerwonymi przebłyskami, piana kremowa, masywna, gęsty lejsing. Wygląd na 5+. Aromaty dość słodkie lecz głębokie. Mocno orzechowe, machoniowe, lukrecja, toffi, może nawet bardziej syrop klonowy. W tle nieco słodów. Zamieszane intensywniej, uwalnia aromaty zbliżone do winiaków, miodów pitnych.

2013 vintage bottle shared by b3shine - thanks again, Beau! Pours a hazy amber color with a finger of beige head that lasts a long time and leave some trailing lace in the glass. Notes of brown sugar, caramel, bourbon, toast, vanilla, figs, oak, and chocolate. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, warming, sharp mouthfeel, the sharpness from both the hot alcohol presence and surprisingly high carbonation for a barrel-aged barley wine. And still, I liked this quite a bit. Enjoyable.

2013 vintage 650ml bottle shared by Ratebeer friends. Pours with an aggressive bigger khaki bubbly head, slowly reduces. Hazy brown red color. In the nose, seems like a touch of brett or something funky in there. Flavor is nicer than the nose though. Pleasant dark fruit, some caramel, touch of chocolate. Mild spiciness. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, very mild bitter, just a mild bit of warmth. Bigger body. Kind of slick texture. Lighter carbonation. Solid BA barleywine, though just a bit of sweet.

Bottle: Poured a dirty cloudy dark brown color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with some vanilla and bourbon notes with quite a bit of residual sugar notes. Taste is also dominated by too much residual sugar notes with some bourbon and vanilla notes, light apparent alcohol and caramelized malt notes. Body is full with limited filtration and medium carbonation with some alcohol being apparent. A bit too sweet and un-balanced for my taste.

Bottle from Belmont Station. A: Murky dark brown, bubbly cappuccino head that is not in the slightest bit inviting, lacing. N: Toffee, caramel, vanilla, toast, walnuts, biscuit, oak, slightly burnt brown sugar, plum, earth floors, touch of raisin, and some floral elements. T: Big sweetness and some burnt wood and bitterness. M: Alcohol is noticeable, medium body that should be bigger, a light tickle of carbonation. O: A loud barleywine with a prevalent barrel note. I’m enjoying it, but it’s not the highlight of my BBA barleywine experience, either. Pretty good for a good price, but Thor didn’t send Mjölnir to Earth, either.

Bomber, 2014 vintage. Sweet dark fruit aroma with notes of caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Pours deep mahogany in color with a thin tan head with very little lacing. Starts with excellent dark fruit flavors with some caramel and nutty esters. Finishes quite smooth with good vanilla and bourbon flavor as well as a little bit oak. Nice bourbon barleywine.

marcus (7838) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAR 23, 2015
Bottle from Corti Brothers, Sacramento. Pours dark reddish brown with an attractive beige head and a fruit and vanilla aroma. There is a full-bodied dark fruit and molasses flavor with lots of candi sugar and a dry slightly bitter finish. There is a nutty aftertaste with a warm alcohol trail. This beer seems to be grossly underrated.
