COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Festival beer at the Great Canadian Beer Festival 2008. This strong ale is heavy and malty with lots of fruitiness. Having matured for one year at this time, the development of winey notes and complex flavours are very evident. This is the reincarnation of the classic Thor’s Hammer BW that brewmaster Gary Lohin made at former brewpub Sailor Hagar’s.

The new Thor’s Hammer has been done for a few years now but I always had trouble finding it, even getting shut out at the brewpub. Finally tracked it down at St. Augustine’s. Cloudy amber-brown with no head. The aroma has a lot of malt, chocolate, hops, and a little bit of earth and fruit. There really is a lot going on here. Rich malty, with lots of earthy, woody hops as well. At this point, it’s a straight up barley wine. A good one, but not as distinctive as I remember it.

[on tap at the Alibi room] Excellent cereal grain aroma with some detectable hops. Dark orange/dark amber with a dotty white cover. Salty hops flavour together with sweet cereal malt. Excellently balanced dry yet sweet finish. Medium to full body, low carbonation, warming.

Aroma: proper malt sided with warmth of alcohol. 7+
Appearance: dark woody amber, hint of brown. Medium rocky top. 3+
Palate / Taste: Full bodied. Malty , sweet sided with warmth of alcohol. Not best barley wine I had recently yet very solid and what more important very true to the style (English barley Wine).

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours reddish brown with a tiny head. Aroma of brown sugar, toffee, caramel and intense sweetness. Flavour is cloyingly sweet, with caramel, toffee and quite a boozy quality.

Draught at the brewpub
Cloudy dark amber color. Nutty caramel aroma. Correct body strength; sweetish malt juice flavor, not big, with decent hopping, and an evident butterscotch and nut flavor. Warming final. I love Barley Wines, this one is sweet and not bad, but it’s not hoppy or complex as others; it even reminds me Abbey Quads...

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a brownish red / copper. Aroma of cinnamon, toffee and sugar. Flavour of caramel malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, toffee, lots of sugar and alcohol. A bit sweet and unbalanced for a barley wine, but still good.

On tap. Dark brown and almost opaque. Initial hop aroma fades to strong malt aroma. Light to medium carbonation. Malt taste is heavy, sweet and strong. Strong licorice aftertaste with high alcohol in evidence. Fruity. Flavour is not hoppy.

On tap and aged a year, served in a snifter with a small tan head. Malt-forward aroma with raisins, chocolate, licorice and vanilla. Has a burnt caramel, earthy taste, rye, vanilla and nutty-spice under tones. Starts aggressive but finishes smooth. A solid barleywine that I will come back to in future incarnations.
