Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort is a Belgian inspired Weissenbock brewed as a one off collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, La Petite Mort - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. La Petite Mort is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

Smells like toffee and caramel. Very enticing. Pours a cloudy red-brown color with little head. Very dry taste with some sweetness and a linger tart-bitterness. Flavors of raisins and caramel are quickly dominated by flavors of oak, bourbon, and vanilla. Quite a unique beer. I bet this cellars well.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours brown with a small tan head. Aroma suggests bourbon and chocolate. Med + body. There’s a little heat. Some treacle. Some bourbon. Maybe even some oak astringency. Not too mention chocolate. Possibly some fruit ester. Maybe even a hint of banana. Pretty tasty stuff.

Pours a deep brownish black from the bottle with thin wisp of tan head that leaves light lace. Aroma is big on the vanilla and chocolate of the bourbon barrel, slight dark fruit. Taste follows, big on the barrel, but nice Belgian qualities lying behind and a hint of dark chocolate. Smooth and easy for the alcohol, yet thick on the tongue, very soft carbonation, amazing.

Poured from from a bomber into a snifter dark brown with a thin head Aroma is bourbon malted sweetness. Flavor is flat out bourbon caramel. Malty bready quite Belgium Balance is excellent though thinner than I like in a sipping strong ale. Bought a second bottle to lay down for future reference.

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark mostly opaque brown with a slight ruby tint. Head is limited but is a fine creamy khaki. Smell is heavily bourbon, dark fruit and caramel and the taste backs this up and has a noticeable level of alcohol. Very tasty brew, too bad that Binny's had a 1 bottle limit. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from a secret spot although this one is not so secret. Excited to see a central waters beer and then realized it was a collab. Either way nice craftsmanship here with the barrel. Earthy gritty and chalky texture. Bit of vanilla not too much bourbon. Chewy grain caramel toffee flavors. Let this one warm to make it a little smoother on the palate.

Pours a buckwheat honey color. The aromas on this is intensely bourbon. Vanilla, banana bread. Beautiful. Sweet and malty flavors. Smooth. The back end is a little hot on the bourbon but still...age would do great things for this beer. Still a beauty of a drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Smooth sweet bourbon barrel. Nice round well balanced flavor. Warming bourbon. Didn’t notice the Belgian yeast at first, but I think it’s lurking as a clove flavor. Body and malt come off a bit like a tripel with dark fruit and leather notes. Really struck by the sweetness that’s so good. Good carbonation but not prickly. This is a solid after dinner drink for sipping and sharing. Everything dark CW does is so good.

This was enjoyable and interesting. I thought a bit of port in this. Bourbon-barreling is done tastefully. Alcohol is certainly present. Mouthfeel is thick, which makes sense given its aging and wheat additions but it does make the beer a bit heavyhanded.
