Style: Dampfbier

Local Option Dampf Loc is an all-barley warm fermented ale brewed by the folks from Chicago’s Local Option; inspired by “Dampfbier” originally crafted by medieval peasant inhabitants of the Bavarian Forest. During the fermentation process generous amounts of foam and surface bubbles burst in the tank, giving the illusion that the ferment is boiling or “steaming.” Tony Russomanno and Noah Hopkins took it upon themselves to brew Dampf Loc as a modern interpretation of its Teutonic predecessor, creating a “Hefe Gerste” ale that is true to its roots; unmistakable in character yet accessible to beer drinkers of all palates.

Dampf Loc has a mild hop profile, medium body with pleasant effervescence and a clear, rich, orange hue. Dampf Loc is ideal for warm months, yet enjoyable year round.

500ml bottle @ Stefans place 30/6-14. Hazy orange, white head. Oranges, yellow apples, yeast and dough, some bubblegum and herbs. Sweet with fruity notes of oranges, apples and apricot, bubblegum, wheat, cookies, some bread and hay. Soft low grassy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, smooth texture. Slightly uncertain and soft around the edges with a yeasty fruity taste with hints of bubblegum. Ok.

.5 L Bottle. A light to mid bodied fig and plum tasting ale. Reminiscent of many a beer sampled in nameless abodes about Bohemia and Bavaria all those years ago during my rambling days. Large foamy head. not much lacing left behind which was a tad surprising. Nose of deep malts. Wish it wasn’t so damned pricey.

Tap from Happy Gnome. Light golden in color. Very minimal hop presence as expected. Taste heavy on malted barley. Not a lot of complexity. Sweetness is there. Aroma is mild. Some caramel notes. Hard to find much to appreciate. Disagree that it fits a summer atmosphere.

Pours a hazy orange-gold with a fluffy khaki head that settles, leaving touches of soapy lace. Nose involves caramel, toasted malt, some metallic notes, a bit of molasses, some dusty yeast, and nutty almond notes. Fairly sweet, somewhat bitter. Medium bodied, fairly oily, decent action, with a fairly dry and toasty finish. Interesting brew, pretty enjoyable.

Bottled. 5cl sample. The aroma has red fruits, apple, some earthy yeast. Bit hazy (notes don’t mention colour indication) beer with an off-white head. The taste is sweetish, slightly bitter and has red fruits, apples, hints of honey. Nice and unusual beer.

Sample at Twenty Tap. Clear amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel, wheat and fruit. Light-bodied with flavors of grainy malt, caramel and ripe fruit. Subtle hops in the background. The finish is grainy with an earthy malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Very interesting beer. Give this to a BMC drinker to try and turn them on to good beer. Very light and easy to drink. Aroma was a little weak which worried me. Earth, nuts and a slight wheatiness. Pour was a somewhat cloudy dark orange with a thin off white ring for a head. Taste was delicious. Great session beer. Nutty, with notes of apple, banana and toasted biscuits. Very crisp with nice strong carbonation. Quick and light finish. Fantastic beer
