Draft on tap at The Beer Spot GTMW Eve Event at Brickhouse (Madison, WI). Pours a deep dark brownish hue, well hazed and dark with a loose tannish head atop. Mellow ring laces ok. Aromas are peaty and caramel, decent oak and spirit. Bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Some vanilla, red fruit, and toast. Decent carmelization. Decent oak tannic quality and gentle spirit heat. Initial is medium to fuller medium bodied, some good warmth, toffee and red fruit hit. Some good spirit, oak, firm bourbon, warmth, and vanilla. Middle is a bit toasty, red fruit, gentle peaty quality. Some vanilla, firm toasty carmelized quality. Some sweetness. Backend is a bit dry, oaky, mellow spirit. Some rich vanilla and wet wood. Not hot, helps thin a seemingly too thick and brooding beer well. Some stickiness, carmelized and toasty elements present well. Finish is a bit dry, oaky, and tannic. Wood and barrel elements mixed with a red fruit/carmelized feel really rue the day. This beer was thick, but got better with some barrel time. Neat.

Had the good fortune to happen upon this on tap at the Amherst brewery (7-20-2013). After being very pleased with Slainte over the past winter, I found this variation to be near the peak of malty sweet smoothness and, of course, quite boozy.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2014 2012 pre-GTMW at Brickhouse, sample courtesy of Madvike. Dark brown, unfiltered, no head. Cask carbonation. While the regular version is sublime, this is just brutal and lacks drinkability. Burnt tobacco bourbon aroma. Too much sugar, lacks balance. One for the bourbon fiends. 6-3-7-3-14 Tap at Old Fashioned when they released the first year of bottles. 7-4-8-3-16

Tap at Happy Gnome. Deep murky muddy brown pour with a spotty head. Mild bourbon, oak, very slight vanilla - good stuff.

On tap at Brickhouse BBQ - Pours black with no head. Nose is bourbon, vanilla, oak, and well--basically the barrel. Taste is the same, real smooth and sweet. Big, slick, and smooth carbonation. Boring beer, and the same issue I had with the BB La Petite Mort. These two beers tasted basically the same, and could have been any style at the base.
