"aroma starts as vanilla, caramel malt, with a hint of pepper and hops. well made BW..the hops shine through the bourbon, though the bourbon blends well and is the highlight. slight peppery aspect to the sweet full finish. thanks again, John, this is a real sipping treat."

GABF. Golden Amber hue with off white head. Aroma is caramel, bourbon, honey, oak. Full body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a nice dry character from the oak and ethanol. Overall this was a really nice brew.

Pours a dark, dull amber color with a rich tan head that has a greenish hue. Big rich caramel and oak nose. Sticky and chewy. Some alcohol heat is noted. Rich caramel and oaky flavor. This is a lovely sipper.

Sadly, since bourbon barrels, high-abv stouts and barleywines are my favourite beers across the world, this was the worst of that variety I have ever tasted. In fact, it was the worst non-Lager/Amber I’ve ever put to my lips. I’ll tell you why: The Hops drown it in a bath of cloying Hop He__ll. I do not care for IPAs and hops much though - so take my criticism with a grain of ... barley.

Beautiful amber mahogany color, but thin head. Big malty whoop in the nose with lots of vanilla, bourbon, marshmallows and moderately sweet. Sticky, nice mouth with tons and tons of malt backbone, smooth, slightly boozy, lots of vanilla, oak, cherries, there are a fair amount of hops in there too. Just big, bad and delicious from start to finish. I love this stuff.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2014 Big bad ass BW. Lots of vanilla, bourbon, wood and toffee. All well integrated. A pleasure to sip.

Old rating - for a great beer. Darker red-brown color. Bourbon, molasses, and dark fruit dominant aroma. Taste is sweet and boozy with more dark fruits and bourbon. Vanilla strong at the end with a bitter kick. Definitely full bodied and a sipper.

Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours a very deep orangeish red with a small but very well retained head.

The aroma is boozy from the onset, it’s chocolaty, and decidedly caramel forward. So this is to say that it’s sweet smelling, but it’s got a bit of cherry & bourbon to it as well.

The flavor is something, toasted marshmallow, caramel, mild chocolate, layers of crystal malt character, and a nice woodiness. The bourbon is decidedly forward but not out of balance, it provides (I suppose) a good amount of vanilla, some ashiness, and some rich oak character. The beer is certainly sweet, although it’s within a manageable range of sweetness, at least for me.

The palate is big and the beer is mouth coating, it sits a tad heavy on the tongue but the mild happiness provides a little zip so the lingering finish doesn’t leave such a heavy feeling.

Sample at Great Taste of the Midwest on 08/09/2014: Hazy dark brownish-amber color with a thin tan head that diminishes steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of bourbon, malt and dark fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, caramel malt and vanilla. The finish is mildly boozy with an oaky vanilla aftertaste. Enjoyable all around.

Pours clear amber with thin head. The nose is toffee, honey, brown sugar and booze. The taste is fruity esters, citrus hops, brown sugar and bourbon. Medium bodied. Nice little hoppy Barleywine. 4.1
