Bottle under the guise of ’’Bourbon Barrel Barleywine 2008’’. Wonderful aroma; sweet, butterscotch and plenty of strength. Hazy reddish amber color with light tan, tight bubble head that lasts. This brew is outstanding. Silky smooth caramel butter slides from the front to the back of the tongue, igniting the palate like a spark ignites a pilot light. The alcohol zaps your tongue on the finish and is considerably warming. It’s not every day that you have a barrel aged barleywine, so it doesn’t remind me of many other barleywines, although it does fit the style with its palpable malt bill and high gravity profile. I picked this brew up along with the bourbon barrel cherry stout, at Woodman’s in Madison expecting very good beers, but not necessarily world class beers. I paid $3.19 a piece for 12 oz bottles. I’m quite impressed. I remember 5-6 years ago attending a bottle only beer fest in Wisconsin Rapids with about 20 brewers represented and Central Waters’ offerings clearly best of show. There’s talent in that house beyond the bourbon barrel stout, which I see is only 1 point ahead of this brew in average rating. I dig this brew and perhaps it’s enough to pull me out of my rating hiatus?

Bottle. [Tasting session @ Papsoe, 31-10-2008] Average creamy beige like head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Light cloudy amber color. Aroma of bread, vinous, grain, dried fruit, Sherry like, alcohol. Over the palate came good hoppy notes combined with the strong malty profile. Full bodied with an average carbonation and thick light alcoholic texture. Heavy sweet flavor with good counter sweetness. Lingering vinous malty finish.

12 fl oz bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. Pours hazy orange to brown with a fully gone head. Aroma is dense barrel wooden aroma with a mild dried fruity note. Dry malty and wooden flavour. Solid malty to solid wooden flavoured with a distinct warming note. Spiced and acidic finish. Too overwhelming for my taste.

12oz bottle, 2008 Vintage. Labeled Bourbon Barrel Barleywine. Thanks to Badbeer. Pours hazy brown red with a thin, crisp, offwhite head, no retention, no lace. Smells of sweet and vanilla with a good doze of alcohol, bourbon. Very nice BA scent. Tastes sweet and malty with some vanilla and wood. Lots of alcohol flavor as well. Again very nice barrel characteristics, pretty HOT though. Full body, good carb.

12 oz bottle vintage 2008. Murky copper pour. Bourbon and fruit on the nose. Caramel, fruit, bourbon and oak up front with a dry finish. A little too hot, maybe I should have let it sit longer.

2008 vintage. Pours a medium bodied brown amber color with a small, but sticky tan head. The aroma is a rather complex variety of dried dark fruit, candied sugar, semi-sweet smoke, bourbon, and dry oak. The flavor starts off with an abundance of dark fruits (black cherries, red grapes, plums) and some sweeter roasty malts with bourbon, vanilla, and oak rounding out the finish. Good stuff.

Thanks for the bottle, kmweaver! Dark hazed coppery rust, creamy off white head. Deep nose of oaken caramelized pineapple and brown sugar tones warm to soft swirls of orange jam and coconut bourbon. Orange caramel and hints of dark fruit flavor balance well on touches of oak and booze. A nice hop bitterness pulls this together in the end. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Seek this one out for winter time by the fire…

12 oz. bottle - thanks to riversideak for this tasty brew; dark copper with slight white head; soapy, dank, sweet bourbon aromas; very sweet, buttery and rich; tons of raw sweetness; body is thin, but it packs a flavorful punch; dank fruit and sugar all the way; a delicious BW and one that puts central waters on alert for me; thanks alex!!
