Strong, sweet vapors pour off of this. A nose party of alcohol, honey, flowers, sprite soda, and instant oatmeal. That might not sound great, but trust me, everyone is having a good time at this party. Things really get going as it warms: vanilla, bourbon, cashew, maple syrup, and, of course, grain alcohol.

2008 - Rich ruby/garnet color with a moderate beige tight bubbled head. A few isles of lace. Fruit and malt aromas with plums, toffee, caramel and mild vanilla bourbon, that gets stronger the longer the glass sets. A fun scent in that the first whiff yielded pour barleywine and now Iím smelling the bourbon barrel. LIght soft feel that waters out in the finish and linger. Big flavors. Cherry brandy, dark caramel, brandy, bourbon, rum, light nutmeg, toasted bread, lemon and lime zest all float about. Very fresh and hot. This needs some time to relax. A mild nuttiness in the finish that leads to a sharp woody linger. I will need to pick some more of this up and set it down for a year or five. Way to young.

Sampled via 12-oz bottle at 10th Annual Ice Cold Beer Festival in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Pours a hazy caramel amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and a thin off-white ring. Aroma of sweetened caramel malt, apricots, some flowery hops, vanilla and a touch of bourbon. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with flavors of tart caramel malt, toffee, and vanilla. Finish is high warm alcohol, semi-dry with a malty caramel, vanilla and alcohol aftertaste. Very impresive winter warmer.

GABF 2007. AWESOME! This beer is near perfect. A smooth, vanilla flavor makes this brew very complex.

bright crimson coloring, highly clouded, stable off-whitish head above...
Aroma is ripe with fruit...plump and luscious, orange, lemon, grapefruit, mango...ripe and pungent, very lively, very hoppy...nice, nice...
Fresh blast of deliciousness onto the palate at first...fruity and full of flavor...all types of them, a zesty cornucopia, replete with refreshing bitterness...Lordy, I like it! Well done!
Long lasting in the mouth, never quitting...very satisfying flavor...like an orange wedge doused in cognac! So good! An excellent nightcap, which this is tonight...lovely, lovely...

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewery - Strong aroma of toffee, malt, alcohol (of course) and vanilla. Flavor is good, slightly off-balance with whateverís in there, but ends nicely with a light burn.
Earlier Rating: 12/17/2006 Total Score: 3.4
Pours tamarack lake water brown with light cream colored head. Very malty hop aroma. On the whole tastes very much like rye-bread soaked in bourbon.

Event: DarkLord Day 2007
Location: Evening tasting in jsquireís room at the Hampton Inn in Munster, Indiana. Thanks for hosting Jeff!
Serving: Sampled from a 12 oz bottle.
Aroma: Vanilla, mild toffee malt, some alcohol (bourbon).
Appearance: Reddish-copper color, nearly clear. Mild level of carbonation.
Flavor: Caramel and toffee malts with some vanilla and bourbon/alcohol notes (pretty reserved for 11.2% ABV!). A lot of oak/woody flavor seems to come through though...
Palate: Medium-light body.
Overall: Nice barrel-aged barleywine without going to over the top with the bourbon influence.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 24, 2007 Label is the same as the regular Kosmyk Charlies Y2K Catastrophe Ale, but with a circle shaped green sticker on the right side of the label that states, "aged in bourbon barrels." Only available at the brewery. Ruby brown color. Fairly powerful nose, mainly dominated by the bourbon barrel (vanilla, bourbon, oak, coconut.) Palate is okay, could be more textured and creamier. Flavor is good, but not sublime. Fairly well balanced, but the flavors donít come together very well. Iíve had several better bourbon barrel aged barley wines.
