3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Listed as the 2008 Bourbon Barrel Barleywine. Poured a very hazy red color with a medium sized and somewhat long lasting beige head. Aroma of vanilla, dark fruits, wood, chocolate and bourbon. The flavor is a mix of aged fruity (dark fruit) malt and bourbon. Vanilla notes with a wood finish. Long lasting bitterness and tannins. Very warming. Silky mouthfeel on a medium to full body.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a red amber with a thin off white head. Flavor is vanilla and oak up front. A strong vanilla and bourbon flavor up front, some plum and apricot as well as toffee round it out. Finishes clean, mild carbonation, not much hint of the abv. Nice.

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2009 12oz bottle, 2008 batch. pours murky reddish brown with off white head. lots of vanilla and oak in the aroma, figs, and buttery bourbon. flavors has some vegetal oxidation, vanilla, dark fruits, and sharp oaky alcohol finishes. some time would mellow the harsh alcohol finish but this is already pretty oxidized. not a great BA barleywine but still a good one. 3.4.
12oz bottle. í09 batch. a really smooth bourbon presence in this beer leaving nice oaky, vanilla, and smokey notes in the aroma and flavor. the flavor comes off a touch of oxidation which adds a wonderful compliment to the soft bourbon notes. with a dry finish this is awesome, nothing too crazy but soft, drinkable, balanced, with plenty of tasty barrel notes. enjoyed this a lot. 4.1.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Inticing, heavy malts aroma, mixed with raisin, date, fig fruitiness, and pleasant bourbon alcohol, with some vanilla usually associated with the barrels. Smooth malts in abundance in the taste with caramel and vanilla pudding backing, bourbon now becomes strong enough to drown out the fruitiness you detected in aroma, some hop flavor and bitterness. The dominating whiskey slightly deters you enjoying all the malt flavor, it should be more complementry, still very tastey

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Hazy amber brownish color with a beige head that has decent retention and lacing. Aroma just amazes me; I absolutely love their bourbon beers, havenít had anything else that compares. Sweet caramel, bourbon, and vanilla; just such an amazing aroma. Taste echoes the aroma. Whatever they do, the flavors just hit me perfectly. Thicker than medium body, somewhat light carbonation, but goes down very smooth. Another excellent barrel aged beer from Central Waters. Keep it up!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: FEB 18, 2011 Update 2010 Batch--basically the same all around, however a little too strong on the bittering front, peaked at a 5-6, and a bit boozier than the last couple times Iíve had it. I donít feel like changing the rating, though. Old rating follows. 12oz bottle, 2008 batch. Thank you Colin (General_Gao) for this one! Hazy orange with slight reddish highlights and a small beige head that didnít do much other than form a thin ring. Ooh man, this does smell good. Aroma of buttery caramel, and bourbon (vanilla and oak, of course) are strongest. There is also mild oxidation, a bit of tobacco and raisins. There is a hint of alcohol, as expected (especially since this is BA--those seem alcoholic even when they arenít necessarily), but smelled nothing like 11.2%. Lots of caramel in the flavor along with plenty of bourbony notes, as expected. Flavor doesnít try to hide the alcohol, but at least is doesnít taste like rubbing alcohol. Still raisiny with a little bit of leather. Bitterness peaks at a 3 or so in the semi-dry finish. Full body with light prickly carbonation. Burps chocolatey bourbon. I appreciate that the bourbon aging isnít overdone, but I can still see how this would be a little too much for some people. A blend of the base beer and the BA version a la Dirty Old Man would probably make more people happy. However, I dig this quite a bit

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Strong, sweet vapors pour off of this. A nose party of alcohol, honey, flowers, sprite soda, and instant oatmeal. That might not sound great, but trust me, everyone is having a good time at this party. Things really get going as it warms: vanilla, bourbon, cashew, maple syrup, and, of course, grain alcohol.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2008 - Rich ruby/garnet color with a moderate beige tight bubbled head. A few isles of lace. Fruit and malt aromas with plums, toffee, caramel and mild vanilla bourbon, that gets stronger the longer the glass sets. A fun scent in that the first whiff yielded pour barleywine and now Iím smelling the bourbon barrel. LIght soft feel that waters out in the finish and linger. Big flavors. Cherry brandy, dark caramel, brandy, bourbon, rum, light nutmeg, toasted bread, lemon and lime zest all float about. Very fresh and hot. This needs some time to relax. A mild nuttiness in the finish that leads to a sharp woody linger. I will need to pick some more of this up and set it down for a year or five. Way to young.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled via 12-oz bottle at 10th Annual Ice Cold Beer Festival in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Pours a hazy caramel amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and a thin off-white ring. Aroma of sweetened caramel malt, apricots, some flowery hops, vanilla and a touch of bourbon. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with flavors of tart caramel malt, toffee, and vanilla. Finish is high warm alcohol, semi-dry with a malty caramel, vanilla and alcohol aftertaste. Very impresive winter warmer.
