3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle... Cloudy burnt orange ale with very little to no head. Vanilla, caramel and bourbon notes stand out in the aroma. Lesser note of roasted nuts. Full-bodied with modest carbonation. Roasted, caramelized, bourbon flavor. Pretty sweet, but bittered just enough to provide drinkability. Simple, boozy and malty. Thanks go out to juiceisloose for sharing the bottle!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle pours deep copper color almost brown. Big time alcohol aroma with raisins and caramel and a sparse bit of carbonation. Alot of oak in the beginning and smoked meat at the end. A bit medicinal and alot of bourbon. There was a whole lot going on in this one. Some hop bitterness that gives way to some honey and molasses flavors. Not sure exactly how to rate it.

1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
In short: Extra sweet barley candy, too much alcohol and minty medicinal tea. Wouah!. A disturbing aggressive beer.
How: Bottle 12oz. 2008 vintage. Given to me by kmweaver, thanks Ken
The look: Partly cloudy dark red body topped by a small white ring of foam
In long: The not-so-inviting nose is extra sweet and herbal. Taste is aggressively annoying. The malt backbone is simplistic sugary barley candy. Not fruity notes or any complexity here. Alcohol is apparent and tastes like a Gin, honestly. Then that totally inappropriate hopping that really tastes like medicinal tea. Oh and a lot of mint too. They shoud remove the "Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Kosmyk Charlies Y2K " from the name.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2007 bottle and shared with tjthresh: Murky coppery brown hue with a small but lasting frothy head and left spotty lace upon the glassware. Weeeeeee, a very barley wine aroma of heavy malts (caramel, toffee, rye bread, and even some sourdough) along with noticeable alcohol vapours, bourbon barrel, some resiny and peppery hop still left, papery slight oxidation noticed too. The taste starts surprisingly quite fruity (prune, fig, over ripened apple), oily sweet malts, bitter old hops, astringent grains, white pepper and clove, hint of marzipan and woodshop floor dusty dry finish. The mouth feel is lush and warming, medium to full bodied but just missing a extra kick in the teeth that the aroma and flavor profile demanded. Overall a well done brew that I would revisit if given the opportunity.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle 2008 bonus beer from BrianK (thanks!) poured a hazy tarnished copper with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of bourbon, sherry, oak, toffee, plum, carmel and pepper. Palate was full bodied and smooth with a slightly syrupy warming finish. Flavors of bourbon, oak, carmel, plum, raisin, pepper, toffee and a hint of vanilla with a smooth lightly strupy warming lingering bittersweet finish. Amazingly great Beer!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Thanks MaxxDaddy! Pours murky amber with a dense tan head. The aroma is boozy and sweet with lots of vanilla, caramel, light oak, and underlying dark fruit character. Slick body- warming but not overly boozy. This is an already sweet Barley Wine to begin with, that luckily didn’t gain too much sweetness from the Bourbon. Like the base beer, it gives off some honey and dark fruits in the flavor- prunes and moderate vanilla. A bit sweet, again, but it works in moderation. Decent stuff. Lost some of it’s base spiciness from the barrel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks to Maxxdaddy for sharing. Sampled both teh y2k kosmyk charlies and the bourbon barrel Barleywine side by side. Liked both about the same. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber with a thin lasting head. Aroma is tons of sweet malts, backed by lots of bourbon, but not over the top of hot- the oakiness form the barrels seems a bit old and faded almost turing to leather and earth which is cool in a barleywine sometimes. More sweet complex malts in the flavor although a bit more harsh phenolics seep through that were covered by the borubon aroma before, old wood and bourbon come through in the end. Good mouthfeel and finish is long lasting. Pretty good overall.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz bottle via trade but unfortunately I don’t remember from whom. Aroma on this one is great. Lots of sweetness from the barley wine, notes of honey..molassess..malts..and a slight touch of wax which I find in lots of BWs. From the bourbon barrel, vanilla notes..oak barrel..slight traces of bourbon upon warming. Palate on this one is very smooth especially considering the 11.2%, fuller bodied with good carbonation for a BW and a slightly chalky mouthfeel. Flavor is great with a fantastic marriage of sweetness and bourbon barrel... vanilla, oak, alcohol, mollassess, dried dark fruits, honey, toast. Wow I never heard any buzz or read any reviews about this beer so I wasn’t expecting much but....Wow, great stuff!!!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle (Discount Liquors)-2008 bottle-Pours a hazy dark amber body with a small off white covering and ring for a head. The aromas make you want to just dig in. They have malt, caramel, slight bourbon, dried fruits, and toffee. Taste begins with malt and bourbon with a nice dose of vanilla contributing. It finishes with a bit of oak. This full bodied brew covers up the alcohol and is balanced very well. Not being a big fan of this style I have to say this is quite enjoyable and quite tasty.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2008 bottle, labeled as Bourbon Barrel Barleywine. Aged for nearly a year. Pours hazy, dark auburn amber in color. A small, foamy, beige colored head settles to a swirly film. A swish of the glass reveals dense, sugary, sudsy legging that leaves slow moving spots behind on the glass. The aroma is quite nice. The malt base shows dark toffee and caramel, with a bevy of bourbon soaked, dried dark fruits, such as cherry, fig, and raisin. Oak imparts its signature vanilla quality. The whole concoction takes on a sherry-like profile, alcoholic warmth coming through but not outdoing the malty, fruity sweetness. Flavors continue the theme, rich toffee and nougat showing along with cherries, raisins, and heaps of oaky vanilla, all saturated with a malty bourbon. Big bodied and syrupy, the sweetness conceals what is clearly a big alcohol content. Like the rest of the brew, the finish is very sherry-like, ending almost dry, with lingering fruit. This is a great barleywine, perhaps just a bit too warm, but otherwise rich and complex.
