4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Vintage 2009. Bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a tawny, rusty amber with just a sheet of lace on top. Good amount of bubbles rising up, even after 3 years in the dark. The aroma has a slight musty scent, but the oak and vanilla come through on the finish. Subtle bourbon notes invite me to partake.
Heavy feel as this one is a sipper. Rich, syrup-like feel coats the palate. The bourbon character has held its own after time passed. It may not be as powerful, but there are nice sweet flavors of vanilla, caramel, toffee noted. The hop presence has faded, but there still lingers hints of bitterness that round out the sweet character of this one.
This beer was a treat to sip. Would have been great to do a side-by-side with a ’12, but I can’t have everything...

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle - Toffee, chocolate and boozy bourbon. Dirty reddish brown and a thin light brown head. Raisin, brown sugar, prune and a long sweet finish. Bourbon is much lighter in the taste than in the nose.

12oz bottle, received via trade with heybeerman -
I’ve had the pleasure of consuming this great beer a few times with different vintages. This is the 2012 vintage, and while it might still be a little young it shows off the fantastic barrel aging and just oozes out bourbon with an emphasis on the wood. Vanilla, bourbon, medium-sweet malts dominate the aroma, and while that 1-2-3 combo might seem a little simple, it freakin rocks. The wood really shines though on the palate and if you ever want to show a person what barrel aging can do to a beer, this is a fine example. Lots of woody tannins, vanillin and bourbon and, like the aroma, is fantastic. I can only imagine this beer getting better with a little age, but it’s pretty damn good right now.

"aroma starts as vanilla, caramel malt, with a hint of pepper and hops. well made BW..the hops shine through the bourbon, though the bourbon blends well and is the highlight. slight peppery aspect to the sweet full finish. thanks again, John, this is a real sipping treat."

Pours a dark, dull amber color with a rich tan head that has a greenish hue. Big rich caramel and oak nose. Sticky and chewy. Some alcohol heat is noted. Rich caramel and oaky flavor. This is a lovely sipper.

Sadly, since bourbon barrels, high-abv stouts and barleywines are my favourite beers across the world, this was the worst of that variety I have ever tasted. In fact, it was the worst non-Lager/Amber I’ve ever put to my lips. I’ll tell you why: The Hops drown it in a bath of cloying Hop He__ll. I do not care for IPAs and hops much though - so take my criticism with a grain of ... barley.
