lagomswedish (213), Umeå, Sweden Mar 11, 2007 Bottle from Ughsmash (thanks!). There’s no getting away from it - this beer smelt odd. The bourbon was there as expected. But the overpowering smell of meaty gravey granules and cabbage were not, I suspect, part of the brewer’s plans. It was so off I passed it to my wife to smell for a second opinion. She screwed up her nose and suggested "farts".
Flavourwise there’s a nice buttery streak of caramel running through the beer, with refined chocolate and coffee hints. Ultra smooth mouthfeel with a dash of bourbon that gives a warm afterglow as it makes its way down the throat.
OK stout, but the farty blowback every time I took a sip took the edge of the enjoyment factor.
joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA Mar 9, 2007 Updated: Jan 30, 2008Thanks to Badgerben for sharing. Likely an 04 vintage. Nice slightly red balck head with very little head. Very nice ripe fruit, caramel, toffee, candi sugar like sweetness. Wow! Great full mouthfeel with light carbonation and a nice ripe fruit sweetness and caramel is very dominanant. This is a wonderful beer that is not pure bourbon, bu tinstead is like a sweet stout with hints of caramel. This is frickin awesome. henrikb (1298), Aarhus, Denmark Mar 2, 2007 Tasted blind together with 4 other Bourbon Barrel aged Stouts - Brown body with a beige head; Unpleasant a bit sour, cardboard like with a very little cherry, strange!; Thin body, huge carbonation, sour and salty; Too long finish, sour, salty with some Bourbon aromas and quite a bit of alcohol. Not to pleasant and I guess (hope) broken. madsberg (4873), Søborg, Denmark Mar 1, 2007 Bottled. Dark reddish brown coloured. Light brown head. LIght coffee, light alcohol, ligth spice and chocolate. Is a bit sour and seems infected. Flavour as well has some sourness. Roast, light barral, light liqourice and some spice. Has some applenotes. Is quite light bodied. Ends on a light chocoroasted note. Nothing special. Tasted blind. mabel (2530), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 28, 2007 [150-20061221] 341mL. Meaty beef stock aroma with boozy wafts. Dark brown coffee body with very little light brown head. Same malty meaty stock carried through in flavour with a nice long aftertaste. Full body. Interesting and very direct combination, a tad overpowering. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 23, 2007 Updated: Aug 4, 200712bottle, 2007 vintage. wow this year it was released with no hype. cool. pours dark brown with small tan head. nose has nice bourbon, oak, coconut, and nuts. the bourbon isn’t over done. flavor has lots of vanilla, with bourbon, caramel, and roasty. start is just not big enough for the barrel and can’t hold it’s own weight. still a tasty ba beer. a tad thin, nose is the best part. realale420 (399), west covina, California, USA Feb 19, 2007 12oz bottle poured a light black color with a small tan head. The aroma was full of bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate, roast and alcohol. Wow, the taste was heavy bourbon and oak. Wonderfull flavors come together as it warms. Bourbon flavors might be a tad too overpowering as expected, but should start to mellow after some time. Can’t get much better. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 28, 2007 Thanks captaincougar for this one! Pours black but not pitch black, some light penetrates the glass. Not much of a head appears. Aroma was of tobacco, roastiness, bourbon, and some vanilla. On the first taste I noticed this seemed pretty thin for a imp stout and I was waiting to feel the alcohol but i didnt. I dont know how the alcohol is hidden in this with not much sweetness. Flavor seemed a little smokey, light bourbon but not overpowering, maybe a little chocolate. Great beer, I liked this alot.
