Pours pitch black with a tiny tan head that leaves immediately. Aroma is vanilla and bourbon. Taste is bitter from the roasted malts that are then mostly covered up by sweet caramel malts and bourbon. It’s not as heavy on the bourbon flavor as others I’ve tried but it’s definitely there and more balanced, which I prefer. The main issue I have with this beer is that it is overcarbed for the style and there’s too much of the carbonic bit to it which makes the fuller body seem much more light. This gets better when you let it sit out a bit to warm up and lose some of the carbonation. Overall I’m fairly impressed with this stout and pleasantly surprised that it didn’t taste like carbonated bourbon like many others of this style tend to be.

Cellared from 2015. Pours black With a beige head. Sweet to the nose. Smell the bourbon, some toffee as well. Mouthfeel is a bit oily, very smooth. Taste goes from sweet to a little bittersweet, lingers nicely. A little smoother, more mellow than last year, aged well. Will try another next year.

Bottle, black beer, almond colored head. Aroma molasses, raisin, vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, cookies. Taste is vanilla, oak, coffee, molasses, malt, chocolate, raisin, bourbon. Palate is rich and thick. This has a strong oak backbone, but it’s not astringent, it tastes rich, old, balanced, dry...really good. Ima sip this awhile, before I rate. Coming to the end of the bottle. I still love this... I’d buy this by the 6 pack

The finest bourbon barrel stout I’ve ever tried. I’ve had many from all over the United States and this one ranks the best.

superspak (4233) - Michigan, USA - FEB 28, 2016
12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in fall 2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather/tobacco, and oak/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. A bit of booziness as it warms, but nothing significant. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather, and oak/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate roasted bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather/tobacco, and oak/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roasted bitterness/oak spice as well. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish; with minimal booziness. Overall this is an outstanding BBA stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. This was very unique for a stout; as it seemed to have a lot of characteristics related to barleywines, but still remained roasty enough to feel like a stout. A highly enjoyable offering.

Rating #5300! 2013 Vintage Bottle Deep dark brown coloured body with a touch of brown colour that isn’t opaque at the edges, along with a very thin, just oily top of deep brown. Aroma of bourbon, alcohol, oak, vanilla, raisins, cognac, whiskey and much more alcohol - super pungent. Medium-bodied; Ridiculously pungent bourbon and oak flavours with a lot of alcohol flavours along with some anise, cognac, roasted malt, light coffee and even a hint of the soy sauce. Aftertaste shows the nice complexities of the bourbon, with a ton of alcohol warmth throughout along with caramelised sugars and a dose of pit fruits. Overall, a good beer (tastes more of a porter) that’s been aged in fresh (or for a very long time) bourbon barrels; Great to try, and perhaps a bit more polished after long times, but this is still a tad harsh after a year of aging. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle (Vintage 2013), purchased from Good Beer in New York (East Village), New York on 25-April-2014 for US$5,49 sampled at home in Washington to celebrate both beer #5300 and the welcoming of the Blizzard of 2016 on 22-January-2016.
