Bottle thanks to Brigadier. Poured a deep, reddish-brown with a very nice initial cap of beige head.. settled down to a thin cap. Aroma picked up coffee and dark chocolate.. drier aspects to it and a touch of sourness. Flavor had dry-roasted darker chocolates and some bitterness from coffee grounds.. sour coffee finish. Dry and lighter-bodied on the palate with a little odd sourness. This was very mediocre.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 Brigadier (1938) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 21, 2007
12 oz bottle
Coming from Central Waters I did not have high expectations for this release. Yet it somehow still fell a bit short. While it was not exactly undrinklable I still found myself wondering if a little water had not gotten mixed in during the bottling process. It was too thin and one dimensional for my tastes. Still, your mileage may vary so if you happen to be at the brewpub or acquire a bottle give it a try.
Aroma / Appearance - The reddish black body slid around the glass a little too easily. I could tell from the outset this was not going to be a thick bodied stout. The nose confirmed that - fresh ground coffee beans and vanilla creamer formed the entire bouquet. There were no undertones of anything else to tempt one to do more exploring so I just moved right on.
Flavor / Palate - Watery coffee grounds remixed with the beans greet the senses along with the mouthfeel of flat Pepsi. This is entirely one-dimensional even though I found myself looking hard for anything else that might make me like it more. Somehow it is still enjoyable though perhaps only as a mindless session beer before you move on to thicker, more complex styles. I’ll be passing on this one in the future.

Sampler flight at the brewery. Smoky nose and palatte, dark thick brown color, good flavor-not "smooth" or milky like a traditional stout, but has kick, like a bourbon.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 badgerben (4116) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - NOV 9, 2006
Nice death black color with a quickly vanishing head. Big chocolate aroma with lots of roasted malt and to me, it seemed a little salty. Good flavors of roast and chocolate, but it’s pretty thin on the body. Slightly bitter finish.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ungstrup (23960) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - SEP 10, 2006
A pitch black beer with a fast disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of chocolate, but also with notes of the roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt, combined with an acidic coffee note, as if the coffee has been standing and boiling on the heating plate, and a light note of chocolate. The body is a bit thin.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a clear, orangey mahogany with a small, off-white head. Malty, burned aroma. Light and almost watery body with notes of hard roasted malt and a lightly burned edge. Dry finish with a lightly bitter edge from the malts. 290806

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2006 Bottled. Dark brown coloured with a clear read gleam. Has a small light brown head. Cocoa, light roast and light coffee in the nose. Flvaour is mildly roasted and has notes of cocoa, coffee and liqourice. Is a bit on the thin side bodywise. Quite balanced. Ends on a watery coffeeish note. Thanks to BBB63 for the trade.

Bottled. Very dark brown coloured. Roasty aroma of coffee. Mild coffee flavour. Rather short finish and light body.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 kramer (3455) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 13, 2006
12 oz bottle, via BBB63. Competely black pour with a small light brown head that faded to a thin ring quickly. Very dry roasted and burnt malt aroma with accents of coffee, yeast, and chocolate malt. Flavor is rather unique. Very, very dry burnt and roasted malt up front. Finish is rather chalky with lots of burnt toast and some astringency. Very light bodied with moderate fizzy carbonation. Mouthfeel is pretty watery, but to style. A pretty interesting beer, just loaded with burnt malt flavor for such a light bodied beer. I rather liked this one.
