A robust, yet suprisingly refreshing porter, Mud Puppy is a favorite of dark beer lovers. Characterized by a thick, rocky head and luscious chocolate-like nose, the malty profile is balanced by liberal hopping for its style.

Bottle. Vegetal caramel chocolate malt aroma. Chestnut brown with moderate light tan head. Lightly sweet earthy chocolate-caramel malt and moderately bitter herbal hay flavor. Decent body. Drier than the typical porter. Nice.

Pours dense, dark, brown to black with a plush foam head that remains, effervescent. Nose has notes of chocolate, hops, pepper, with a smokiness that provides a rich full aromatic experience. Goes across the palate silky and finishes crisp with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Tastes smooth, milky, with the spicy hops rounding out the drink. The flavors blend so well it makes it hard to distinguish individual notes. This is a smooth, crisp, well made porter. This beer tastes like another!

Bottle at home. Initial pour was a pint glass of foam. Took about 4 minutes before it settled into some liquid. Amber brown color - looked more like a dunklerbock. The aroma was somewhat muted by the foamy head but there was some standard roasty malts and coffee. The flavors come together quite nicely - roasty, smoky, sweet, chocolate, coffee. Great balance on the finish.

Sampled from the bottle at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Pours a clear deep brown with a touch of amber and a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of earthy dark grains with roasted malts and a touch of bitter coffee. Flavor has a nice bitter dark grains and roasted malts with a bit of bitter chocolate underlying.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque, dark brown, when it settles enough to leave any liquid at the bottom of a very tall glass of foam. Eventually, the beer settled to leave 2" of dark brown liquid below a 5-finger light tan head and fair lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Taste of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, smokey peat and hay. Medium body and medium carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A black pour with some reddish highlights and a tan head. The aroma has roasted dark chocolate and mild coffee. It has a medium body with creamy texture and average carbonation. The taste is roasted with a dry finish.

This beer pours a slightly hazy reddish brown with a large tan head that fades quickly. The aroma is heavily reminiscent of roasted malts, so much so that some smoke lingers in the nose; however, the aroma is a bit one-dimensional in this aspect. The taste is slightly bitter and mildly umami, bit the aftertaste is dominated by the toasty and smoky flavors that the aroma hints towards. The palate of this beer doesn’t overwhelm the flavor, bit the slick and thin texture, medium-light body, and soft carbonation don’t really support the flavor either.
