COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A robust, yet suprisingly refreshing porter, Mud Puppy is a favorite of dark beer lovers. Characterized by a thick, rocky head and luscious chocolate-like nose, the malty profile is balanced by liberal hopping for its style.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2012 Delicious porter. I had this on tap, so I can’t comment on packaging, but the pour was dark with a thin tan colored head. Major malts, and a big chocolate nose on this one. Has a bogus name, but a great beer.

Very nice pour and seems to have the aromas I love in a good porter, but the overall taste or feel is a little watered down to me--which seemed odd considering the good aromas I got when first poured into my snifter.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a lightish cola colour near the bottom, all with a thickish, two centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of figs, nuts, earth, caramel, raisins and a hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty flavour with some slightly pungent earthy and floral hops, a good vanilla flavour and quite a bit of the pit fruits noticeable. Aftertaste is smooth yet assertive with some vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt and oak noticeable, but very clean alcohol and earthy notes make this go down relatively easy. Overall, a nice beer for the style with nothing outlandish, but solid, good flavours make this worth finding if you like the style! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Good Beer in New York, New York on 19-July-2014 for US$2,39 sampled at home in Washington on 26-August-2014.

Bottle. Pours mostly clear amber with very little head. Nose is powdered chocolate. Taste is weird. Not a fan.

2014 bottle. Pours a medium brown with an off-white head. Aroma is fairly light. Roasted malt, coffee chocolate and a vegetal, green bitterness. Taste is the same. Medium, slick mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A dark muddy brown, with a half finger of khaki colored head that settles on the surface. Smell is earthy hops, coffee grounds, toffee, brown sugar. Taste is again a earthy hop taste, a light toffee, chocolate, coffee sweetness in the middle. Very little hop bitter in the finish, some light sweetness that carries over. Good overall taste and session able. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The beer has a dark cola brown body and sports a small tan head. Aromas include chocolate roast, subtle coffee. Perhaps a touch of vanilla in the flavor with a hint of smoke. Chocolates, mild sweetness. A touch of roast and coffee beans. Pretty easy drinking with moderate carbonation and a delicate bitterness in the finish. Pretty good.

Nice aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malt, and maple syrup. Nice ebony color...tannish head. Sweet roasted chocolate flavor up front. Notes of eepresso and coffee. Finishes with a sweet begining, followed by bitter chocolate that coats nicely and lingers just the right amount of time. Creamy mouth feel...nice brew.

Poured from a bottle bought at Binny’s in Chicago. Pours a dark brown to black with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly into a faint and uneven layer. Aroma is of roasty grains, light chocolate, faint coffee, cola, and faint caramel. More sweetness and vanilla comes out as the beer warms. Flavor is roasted grains and coffee right up front that linger throughout the taste and after. Distant notes of chocolate and maltiness are present but very subtle. The body is medium to light but sufficient and has just a touch of sweetness to it. I would have liked a little more roundness to the body and mouthfeel but overall, this is a fine porter. Not quite as big and chewy as some of the others but a solid beer and something I will definitely buy again.

Maybe I got a bad batch? The bottle I got was really tart. I leave it in my mouth and it’s just sour. There’s some nice roast and chocolate in there, but it seems like bad quality control. I tend to like sours, but this one would need some fruity notes or more character to be good as one.

Draft @ City Beer Hall (ALB). Nice tan head. Dark brown color. Awesome roasty flavor! Body might be a touch on the light side, but overall I love this beer!
