3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Yeah, well, it’s an Octoberfest, but even among them I’m not sure this one is a great example. Malty with low sweetness, a hint of fruit in the aroma, but otherwise plain. Lightly metallic but if finishes quickly with a plain aspect. Bottle.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright caramel-amber color with a small creamy orange-white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet, tangy and malty though a bit vegetal. The flavor was sweet, tangy and malty with notes of molasses, caramel and faint vegetal malts. Medium finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours dark amber with a soapy off white head that leaves a sudsy film. Aroma has malt a little sweetness and subtle hops and hidden fruit. Taste has gentle hop presence with malt and subtle sweet fruity nuttiness. Palate is thin with a creamy dry finish. Decent and straight forward.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz bottle purchased as part of a mix a six at Festival in Onalaska, Wisconsin. Bottled on SEP notched on label. The pour is a clear copper golden, slight ruby, with a one inch off white head. The aroma is rounded sweet caramel malt, maybe a soft cocoa with a hint of vanilla, and distant grass. The taste is sweet caramel malt, with the same touch of cocoa vanilla, and the grass shows a bit dirty in the back. The palate is medium bodied, with a lower carbonation level, and a silky mouth coating finish. Pretty straight forward malt sweet Oktoberfest. Nice enough.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle @ Brad’s house. Pours a dark orange appearance with a cream colored head. Caramel, toasty grainy, herbal, grassy aroma. Somewhat sweet but not cloying, caramel, toasty, straw, grassy, a touch fruity flavor that is well balanced and delicious. One of the better Märzens that I’ve had in a while.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This is Octoberfest number three or four or something on the year for me. I am digging them this year. It’s a good year for malt, I guess, and this is one beer that’s not afraid to be malty. It pours a clear amber color w/ a very small head of fine bubbles. The nose is malty and, strangely, there is quite a bit of cinnamon and clove spiciness. This is an order of magnitude more subtle than a Belgian but way more esters than I’d expect to see in a run of the mill ale let alone a lager beer. It works though, actually quite well, so while it is completely inappropriate for the style these spice notes do make for good beer. Flavor is up front w/ it’s malty sweetness w/ quite a lot of caramel and sugar flavors. It’s only mildly carbonated but not so sticky sweet as to feel sluggish. This is a rather good beer overall and one of the better Octoberfests this year.
