Skyview (2932), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Aug 21, 2007 On draught at the brewpub in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Brewmaster tapped the remaining of this batch for the 2007 Great Heron Homebrew Open on Sunday, August 19. Pours a hazy muddy golden amber brew with a creamy white head that quickly dissolves to a fine film and spotty lacing. Aroma of yeasty banana bread, some orange and coriander and some sweet pears. Taste is medium bodied, lightly carbonated with flavors of banana, yeast, cotton candy and some herbal spice. Finish has a high 9% alcohol texture with aftertaste flavors of banana and multi-grain malt. The six-month aging of this brew was a nice touch.
JohnnyOS (625), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Jan 20, 2008 Pours hazy dark copper with minimal head. Aroma of yeast, banana, citrus and spice. Flavor matches aroma with a light alcohol finish. The_Enemy (384), Chicago, USA Oct 26, 2007 On tap. Pours a strange, nearly clear but dirty copper brown that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a beer before. No head to speak of. Aroma is slightly vegetal and smells like a glass that just got pulled out of the dishwasher. I’m pretty sure it’s the beer causing this particular olfactory sensation and not the glass itself. Flavor is a pretty straightforward Delirium-type Belgian ale replete with rich sugary malt with touches of clove, bubblegum and a dusting of earthy hops; however, it doesn’t quite have the oomph of a Delirium or Duvel. Alcohol shows up at the back of the throat upon swallow. Thankfully, the vegetal portion of the aroma never shows up in the flavor. Palate is big and thick and rich but a little flat owing to the near-total lack of carbonation. An "OK" beer, but a bit of a letdown. Since Central Waters typically releases good beers I thought I would give this one a shot. The best word I can think of to describe it is underwhelming. While it wasn’t exactly disappointing I was left wondering if there was another aspect to it that had gotten cooked out in the heat. I might have another pint of this if I ever get to the brewery but this shouldn’t be bottled at the expense of anything else.
Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy mandarin orange body was a bit unusual but not totally unexpected. Oranges, coriander and cloves were most obvious but a soap background was a little offputting. It was fairly simple for a tripel if that is the style they were aiming for.
Flavor / Palate - Cotton candy, soap and apple butter create a very unimpressionable flavor profile. The mouthfeel is creamy enough but lacks any punch to set it apart from any other tripel out there. In fact this is subpar even when compared to most American made releases. It’s still not totally poor; I would drink it again if I found it at the brewpub. I probably would stay away from a six pack though. Ughsmash (3082), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Aug 13, 2007 On tap at GTMW. Poured hazy peach with a tall cap of off-white head. The aroma was chock fulla spicy Belgian yeast with white pepper, coriander, and lemon zest representin’.. some sweet bready notes and floral came through as well. The flavor had a great balance between the sweet base and the spicy accents.. floral and bready notes at the base, and white pepper and lemon zest surrounding along with mild floral bitterness. Medium-bodied with a creamy middle and again, quite nice balance. Hit the spot.
