3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 imdownthepub (7473) - Banbury, - DEC 3, 2008
Bottle conditioned, 500ml, aged 3 yrs, from Thirst for Beer, Pwlheli, Wales. Volcanic rush on opening, Black with excessive brown head. Rich fruity stout, quite tart with a blackberry, plum note. The body has dark roasty notes, husky rather than coffee, smooth with the sweetness aged out. Interesting stuff.

Bottle: In fact black coloured with a small firm tanned head; complex nose: ripe black berries, a touch of molasses, a tinge of almonds, roasted malt and coffee; not very dry = sweetish-bitter flavour, medium to full bodied, velvet MF; lingering finish: sourish-fruity with a restrained coffeeish bitterness. Warming a bit. A very pleasant, well rounded Stout.......

Probably the winner of the festival. BUt it is apparently from another brewery. The colour is just nice, the flavour and the aroma are nice combination.

Beer #27 at Spiesy’s. A pretty decent stout from Wales. The name is welsh for The Old Black Bull. Poured with a big frothy head and an almost black, opaque colour. Coffee and hints of chocolate in the aroma. Dry roasted malt and restrained coffee flavours, with some dark berry fruit. Long, quite bitter, finish. Nicely balanced. A very good effort. 500ml bottle (bottle conditioned) from orchard-hive-and-vine.co.uk. BBE 30 July 2005.

Bottle conditioned. So brown its black, good thin but lasting creamy beige head and moderate condition. Good chocolate and roasted barley nose. Moderate chocolate sweetness is the mouth with a background low tangy fruit note. Big long roasted bitterness in the finish with a faint hint of spiciness that could almost be mistaken for mild chilli. Alcohol seems well hidden.

Dark brown; bitter chocolate and coffee notes dominate. The bitterness is quite substantial, more so than any British stout I’ve ever tasted. Coffee notes are lighter towards the end. For all its bitterness and roast, it somes off quite evenly balanced, due to the high gravity.
