In Denmark there is a tradition to sweeten the Christmas time with some nice Christmas brew (Julehvidtøl). This beer is brewed on dark malt sorts with sugar added.

Pours dark brown / black. Slight pale brown head. Aroma reminds me of the canned liquid malt you could buy from Boots in the 1970’s for home brewing. Not a good memory! in fact it tastes a little like that although sweeter. I would never have bought this beer - it was given to me several years ago and I have kept putting off trying it. Until drinking I hadn’t noticed it was a low alcohol beer. Too sweet for me but I get the festive idea.

Bottle courtesy of my parents. Clear dark brown with a small beige head. Grain, brown sugar, light syrup, rye bread, dark dried fruit. Light body, medium sweet with no bitterness. Oily/watery texture, soft carbonation. I grew up on this as a child and apparently I still have a tolerance, though it is very sweet and sugary.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy dark brown with shades of ruby and airy light tan head. Clear aroma of butterscotch, grain, and caramel. Excessively sweet, grainy flavour, with heavy notes of molasses and not entirely fermented malt. Lingering, sweet aftertaste, with dusty and cardboardlike notes. Not even the teddy bear wants to drink it. Filth!

Bottle. Low but lasting fluffy off-white head. Clear very dark ruby brown body. Sweet raisin prune roasted malt nuts aroma. Very sweet roasted malt sugary caramel flavor. Low carbonation. Long sweet finish. I am sure that the intention is to brew a sweet low alcohol beer. They brewery has succeeded in doing so although the taste is a bit too sweet for me.

330 ml bottle. These Danish Hvidtøl is really difficult to rate. I assume most of them taste just like their supposed to, but I can’t say I’m a big fan of them. Anyway, its dark brown, very close to black with a big foamy off-white head. Can’t really find much wrong with the appearance. Aroma is quite strong, lots of dark malt but not really roasted, hint of liquorice and milk chocolate, no hop aroma. The flavor is the worst part, it’s very sweet without any bitterness or depth of any kind, just sweet malt like a soda pop made with malt. Then again, it’s supposed to be like this so I really don’t feel like going to low in the score, but will definitively not say that this is a nice beer at all.
