Cloth bag, Hunstanton. Almost pitch with clinging tan suds. Genuine sweet charcoal, burnt malt, slightly curranty aroma. Milky coffee, chocolate, a chew of dark fruits. The most rounded and serious Iberian interpretation of a dark beer I’ve tasted. If it was a roasty smooth chocolatey English mild I’d give it at least 3.5, so that’s exactly what it’s getting. Against all expectations, a really tasty, well-conditioned beer.

Bottle. Bought in Macau. I notice that sugar is one of the ingredients. That’s pretty unusual. It tastes pretty sweet and isn’t all that bocky. It’s only 5%abv. Sticky with lots of malt - it’s more like a dunkel or porter. Very enjoyable. Didn’t detect much hops. Enjoyed while wandering around Macau’s Fortress de Guia.

This was not a bad beer at all, but I can’t say I’ve had anything else from this brewery. Found it at Penafidelis, a Portuguese cafe around the square from Moeder Lambic in the Brussels neighborhood of Saint-Gilles. Poured a nearly impenetrable black with a tall, tan head. Faint, sweetish, roast-malt nose with some fruity notes. Lightly sweet flavor (again, those dark fruit notes) with a thin layer of dark-roast bitterness (weak, black coffee) that carries the finish. Thin for a stout, but thick for a dunkel. Average carbonation. Quaffable, in the end.

Surprising that a country that produces mainly boring pils can come up with this one. More like a stout than a dunkel it was slightly dry with some roast flavour that really lingers. Very drinkable and highly recommended.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Beese (79) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - JUL 27, 2007
Pours a black colour with just a little bit of brown head. A slightly sweet smell, although not particularly strong. The taste has initial notes of coffee followed by some bitter, slightly sour notes and then a sweet, malty aftertaste. It’s not particularly full of flavour, considering the style, but it’s still quite pleasant. I could definitely drink it all night.
