VeloVampire (400), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 5, 2008 Sample at C’est What - poured a chestnut colour with a creamy mocha head. Spicy, earthy, bready aromas. Like Sweet, but a bit of spiciness (not overpowering) from the rye and an additional complexity from the caraway are quite interesting. Lighter on the palate than expected. Nice beer. Oakes (6973), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Sep 19, 2008 Golden-brown colour. Caramel nose with light brown sugar. Thick, lightly toasty body. There’s some caraway but not much rye. Mostly just a nondescript amber. Beershine (1440), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Sep 18, 2008 Red-brown with lasting head and lacing. Mild nose is almost minty. Taste is sweet and not rye-like in character or texture. The caraway changes the flavor profile quite a bit without being detectable. Smooth, soft mouthfeel. Rastacouere (5343), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Aug 10, 2008 Objectively speaking:
An interesting idea to aim at the infamous pumpernickel liquid bread, but deficient texture.
I like:
Agreeable caraway aroma with its spicy, albeit one-dimensional nose.
I dislike:
Grainy, almost toasty touches that would win by adventuring towards nutty or fruity intricacies rather than remaining linear. Poor light-body with full-on effervescence that bites rather than fills.
Sledge Jr (2720), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Jun 24, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. Pours a dark brownish amber. has a nutty and spicy aroma. Flavor is sweet and has nuts. The rye emerges in this, but is not overpowering.
