Martinus (873) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - APR 10, 2012
Clear golden colour, no head. Almost flat. Malty aroma, quite tart, lemon, hints of mint. Wood tones. Tart flavour, sour, lemon, light sweetness coming up, but not overly sweet like the regular Chapeau geuze. Light astringent wood tones. Very light -almost absent- carbonation. Finish mint, light astringent, wood tones. Lingering minty astringency, reminding of mint tea.
This specific brew is quite lovely! Better than any other Chapeau gueuze/cuvée I’ve had to date. Nice!

Bottle. Pours murky deep amber with a small white head. I get tart green apples on the nose with hints of lemon and malts. Tastes like an attenuated geuze with too much sugar added, however not as much as others I have tried which notches this up a point or two. Palate is rather thin and flat.

A: Pale golden yellow body. Crystal clear with a large number of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. Thin, but dense head. Nice skim. A few stray wisps of lacing.

S: Faint citric notes, just a hint of funky cheese.

T: Predominately sour lemon-citric notes. A bit of apple and wheat. Not particularly complex, but pleasant none the less.

M: Medium-light bodied. Smooth and slick on the tongue. Nice lingering acidity and sourness.

O: A pleasant, yet simple, example of gueuze. While there are plenty of better examples out there, I wouldn’t refuse a glass placed in front of me. Should be interesting to see if this offering improves in each successive vintage released.

Earthy tannins on the aroma with hints of spicy citrus. Pours slightly hazy with a golden hue. Acidic lemon upfront with some sweet citrus notes as well. There are hints of acetic notes but very mild, there are also traces of vinegar in the finish. Not bad though.

(Bottle) Pours hazy yellow. The aroma is of oxidized cheesy hops, horse blanket, tart citrus and hints of mouldy wood. The flavour is heavily acidic/citric tart, and light sweet to dry with notes of wood and horse blanket. Bone dry finish. Light to medium bodied.

Oude Gueze, bottled. A bit hazy, golden body, small white foamyu head. Aroma amazing, dill with potato (wtf??) and the taste is full and exploading, sour and bitter with a long finish. Great beer!

Uncomplicated but very nice and highly drinkable.

Bottle (listed as Cuvee Chapeau Oude Gueuze) with a best before date of 13/04/12. Pours with a just slightly hazy golden yellow body with a minimal frothy white head (low carbonation by the looks of things). Aroma is musty and lightly metallic. Damp/decomposing leaves, a bit of biscuit, white wine, tobacco, humidor, light smokey chlorophenol. Light to medium funk. Flavors of rotten garbage, tobacco, sewer, under ripe papaya. Decent acidity, but the flavors are miserable. Tons of damp leaves, metal. Quite acidic, lemon juice. Some vegital qualities. Very musty. Not a pleasant drink. Prickly carbonation. Bone dry. I was hoping I would actually like this somewhat, but it seems to be like all the other Chapeau beers; a complete drain pour. Thankfully it isn’t sweet!
