COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Disclaimer: This is the sweetened version of Chapeau Kriek. In 2007 a new version was released, which can come with the same label as Chapeau Kriek, but which is a different beer. This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

Bottle, served cellar temperature in tulip glass. Pours very red, dark pinkish with a pink/white head. The glass held in the aromas I imagine, which were quite strong, also a bit inviting, though one dimensional: smelled of candied sugar, cherry candy, but more fresh, less like cheap hallowe’en varieties. Flavours were similar to the aroma. I enjoyed this much more than the chilled bottle I opened a couple of months earlier.

250mL bottle from the LCBO (wtf? it’s 3.5% abv, why not just go insane and bottle in in larger quantities?) Why is it the LCBO feels the need to cram mass quantities of every inane ’lambic’ with a some crappy fruit flavour from this brewery down our throats, instead of at least bringing in something interesting like the Faro or the Gueze from this SAME F***ING BREWERY? Anyways, sorry for the rant, this one pours a deep red that basically looks like fruit juice. Smells actually okay, like nice cherry pie. Taste is, hmm, fascinating. Starts out overtly sweet and cherry like, but soon rounding itself out with some crazy sour tartness, but not really in a lambic sort of way, more in like a sour candy kind of way. It’s like a liquid gobstopper. Well, it’s not totally putrid. The ingredients list on the bottle is absolutely hilarious: beer, cherries, sugar, flavour. Hahaha. Good thing they put ’flavour’ in, because otherwise it might have just tasted like beer, and like, shit, no one wants that, like get f***ing serious.

Bouteille de 250 ml. Dégusté avec french tickler.

Une biere de couleur ruby-rouge avec un mince collet moyennement collant. Odeur de cerises tres intense, alcohol, bonbon rouge et un peu les fraises. Gout sure de cerises.

I tried this beer on August 2, 2008 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a deep red colour, some translucence, with a very thin pink head. The aroma is similar to a child’s cherry lollipop. The mouthfeel is light bodied and champagne like. The flavour is very similar to a sour cherry soda.

Bottle. Pours a deep ruby-pink with a small diminishing pinkish-white head. Sweet, simple aroma of cherry candy. Flavour’s the same, sweet cherries but also mildly sour in the finish. Syrupy mouthfeel, average to medium bodied. Not bad, it’s pretty sweet so the size is right as a little of this goes a long way, but for Chapeau it’s pretty good. On a nice Summer day it can be a decent refreshing drink but for a Lambic it’s just mediocre.

250ml bottle.
Pours a bubbly deep red with a small pink head. Smells like cherry pie. Sweet flavour of cherries but not too overbearing like some fruit beers I’ve tried. A little sourness in their as well. Not too bad.

Bottle. Pours a reddish brown with no real head. Aroma of sour cherries and acidic vinegar. Flavor is quite sweet, nice cherry syrup, cherry candies. Smooth drinking. Nice beer with just the right amount of sweetness. Cherry is a little faded, probably because this is an older bottle.
