Commercial Description:
Disclaimer: This is the sweetened version of Chapeau Kriek. In 2007 a new version was released, which can come with the same label as Chapeau Kriek, but which is a different beer. This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

Dark red and slightly hazy. Some head. Sweet almondy aroma. Not by any means the worst of the sweetened commercial krieks. There is some tartness and even a hint of bitterness.

Bottle. Almost impossible to open, as it has both a bottle cap & a cork. Had I seen the cork, I may not have purchased it, as I was planning to drink on a picnic. Did not have my knife w/corkscrew, because I flew the day before w/carry-on luggage only! So it was a struggle to pry out this very saturated cork. When I did eventually open the bottle, I was disappointed by the blood red stuff inside. poured with a large head, medium lacing. Smelled of chery juice and had absolutely no beer flavors when drunk (no maltiness or yeastiness!). Sweet & sour. 3.5% is unmarked on bottle. No alcohol flavor whatsoever. Easy to drink, like a good carbonated non-alcoholic cider. Preferable over the latter, but not for the price.

Bottle poured into flute in Ghent. Red colour with a light pink head. Aroma is obviously full of cherries but the flavour was well balanced between sweet and sour.

From 12 oz bottle- poured with light carbonation, disappearing head, hard aroma of sour cherries. Hits the mouth with a thin body, nice cherry notes. Good dessert beer.

A middle of the road lambic. Aroma was stong and cherry. Pour was a nice deep dark amber with no head. Taste was a blah mix of cherry and dirt. I don’t know what the dirt taste is but it just comes out in the aftertaste . Strong cherry, medium carbonation and not much more.

purple colored beer with no head. looks more like grape juice. aroma of robotussin. not really sour(maybe a bit tart) but very sweet. tastes ok but not very beer-like or even lambic-like. better than the "exotic". that one is just plain aweful.
