This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

A middle of the road lambic. Aroma was stong and cherry. Pour was a nice deep dark amber with no head. Taste was a blah mix of cherry and dirt. I don’t know what the dirt taste is but it just comes out in the aftertaste . Strong cherry, medium carbonation and not much more.

purple colored beer with no head. looks more like grape juice. aroma of robotussin. not really sour(maybe a bit tart) but very sweet. tastes ok but not very beer-like or even lambic-like. better than the "exotic". that one is just plain aweful.

Bottle. Nice black cherry and musty aroma. Cloudy dark red color with minimal head. Sweet-tart cherry flavor with light mustiness. Nice flavor - just on the edge of being syrupy. A nice beer for those who like sweet "lambics" but traditionalists will hate it.

25 cL bottle. Pours slight hazy red with a brownish hue, small lacing bobble head with pink colour. Dry cherry aroma. Fruity cherry flavour, medium sweetness. Goes into a decent citric cherry finish, maintaining a lot fruit flavour.

[Sampled in june 2004.] This it what they call an industrial product. Where is the lambic??? Ohh, it’s forgotten, but we’ve got a lot of kriek additives. Like bublegum for teens. But I got it on a very hot summerday after a footballmatch and found it refreshing. Sorry!

Cherryskin red is clouded by light yeast and darker brown particulates in the body. A medium pink head forms, slowly diminishing under the weight of sediment. The aroma is of week old marzipan residue, artificial cherry juice, light yeast and an almond liqueur - it throws hints the way of Amaretto, though that smells much more desirable. The flavor is cloyingly sweet, cherry dominant, with sugar at the ouposts and filling gaps in between. No bitterness, very light tartness, mild acidity and a fruit-juice concoction that is nearly too offensive to continue drinking. Sour cherries linger in a finish that is quickly overtaken by an artificial sweetness. Mostly amateurish, definitely not a lambic. Even high acidity couldn’t save this.

Bottle, August 07. Strong cherries arom, but seems to be artifficial. Shinny, slightly hazy burgundy-red color and a medium, bubbly, white head. Sweet, syrupy, cherries-raspberries flavor with a faint, tart-acidic touch and a sweet ending. Artifficial, unidimensional and boring. Medium mouthfeel, a bit too syrupy and cloying. A mediocre, artifficial, forgetable juicy beer.

I didn’t note an overwhelming sweetness, so I guess this is the right place for this rating. This $5.79 bottled brew from a bottle shop in South Bend, IN poured a head of foamy pink hued medium sized bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a hazy with fine particulate pink hued colored body and a poor lacing. The strong aroma was cherry. The dry mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The smooth flavor contained notes of cherry. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.
