Commercial Description:
Disclaimer: This is the sweetened version of Chapeau Kriek. In 2007 a new version was released, which can come with the same label as Chapeau Kriek, but which is a different beer. This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

Bottle. I think I’m rating the right beer? It’s sweet but not really a sugar bomb? It might be an old bottle? Nearly clear amber sort of color? That doesn’t sound like either beer...all very weird. In any case, Aroma of oak and vaguely fruity sugars, a bit acetic. Flavor more of the same with some cherry creeping in toward the end. Weak mouthfeel. Not bad otherwise, although lacking a defining character.

Cherry red with little to no head. Aroma is overwhelmingly cherry syrup, almost like a kid’s cough syrup. Taste is very sweet of cherry syrup, with none of the lovely sourness of better krieks to balance it out. Definitely on the lower-end of the kriek spectrum.

0.25l bottle. Pours a red-brown colour with a foamy, pink head. Aroma is very sour and sweet. Taste is quite sweet with notes of sourness. Definitely quite different.

[1551-20080727] 250mL bottle. Jolly Rancher cherry aroma. Murky, bright dark red body with a quick light pink foam. Sweet cherry candy flavour. Light-medium body is bubbly. Nice beverage, not very beer-like.

2008-07-27. Lightly hazy ruby red body with a smallish pink head. (3+) Sweet cherry candy aroma. (6+) Similar cherry character up front in the flavour, sweet cherry, candyish, tart-sour notes in the finish are brief. Average palate. Decent enough as a sweet drink I suppose, but pretty poor as a lambic. Bottle from the LCBO

Well well I found this hiding in my fridge...it was old. really old and not good. tasted just like a sherry vinegar. I think it was too old to drink. But it had never left my fridge, so who knows. I wont kill it in the ratings becuase I assume it was skunked.

Bottle at Århus Ølfestival 2008. Pours a deep muddy red with a small pink head. Aroma and flavour of Cherry Gums, but not to sweet. Actually quite ok.

Bottle. Intense cherry aroma- pours mahogany / cherry red with a fluffy pink head. First sip is 100% all tart cherry, no beer flavor at all. Very unique, wasn’t expecting this, Not tasting oak or malt or hops. Taste is good, maybe a bit too sweet for me. Glad I tried it- hard to rate since it tasted more like a cherry 7-Up than a beer. But on a warm summer afternoon, look out- this will go down quickly.
