COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Disclaimer: This is the sweetened version of Chapeau Kriek. In 2007 a new version was released, which can come with the same label as Chapeau Kriek, but which is a different beer. This new version is in the database as Chapeau Oude Kriek and it is not sweet. If you had a sweet beer, then you should rate this one. Otherwise, you should rate the Chapeau Oude Kriek.

Description: Since many decades, the brewers of the Senne valley are brewing Lambic. In the 19th century they have created several fruit beers. The cherry beer on base of Lambic was the first or one of the first. The Chapeau Kriek is made on base of Lambic, a artisanal traditional product which ripe on oaken barrels. The Chapeau Kriek is a fresh and delicious beer for delightful moments.

Bottle. A hazy, candy red beer with a pink head of small size. Almond, cherries and hints of lambic in the aroma. The flavor is pretty much the same, with the almond and cherry doing too much of the job. Sweet and sour, slightly astringent mouthfeel. The finish is like sour raspberry candy. A decent one, but too sweet to be quenching. These sweet krieks are not my thing. (090430)

Pours a maroon red body with a pink head. Sweet malty vinegar with lots of sugar and milder hints of sour cherry. Light woodiness but the sweetness is cloying. Not to good.

Skyview (4738) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - APR 23, 2009
Sampled during Skyview Sourfest II in St Paul, MN and shared by BDR. From a 12-oz bottle pours a semi-hazy pinkish red brew with a thick pinkish beige head that slowly dissipates. Aroma of tart cherries, a hint of yeast funk and oak. Taste is semi-sweet, medium bodied with plenty of carbonation with flavors of tart cherries and yeast. Finish is semi-sweet a little more yeast funk to most other Chapeau sours

Much better. Solid kriek flavor and aroma. There’s enough flavor to balance out the cloying character of most De Troch beers.

ChainGangGuy (3682) - Canton, Georgia, USA - MAR 24, 2009
Appearance: Pours a clear, appropriately cherry red body with a smallish, pink-hued head. Smell: Expected aroma of melted cherry-flavored candy. Also, there’s always the stink of over-cooked cabbage and noxious weeds within their lambics, but, thankfully, it’s light when compared to my previous experiences with this place. Taste: Simple, very sweet taste of blanched Luden’s Wild Cherry throat drops. There’s the mild foulness from the nose pushing its way through the taste, but it never manages to eclipse the liquefied cherry lollipop flavor. Hint of cork. Blended mix of fetid and sweet cherry flavors on the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Low carbonation. Drinkability: So far, this has been my best Brouwerij De Troch experience, meaning that it’s been the least rancid bag of sorrow to date. For me, the Chapeau offerings are waaay down, in fact right at the very bottom of the lambic totem poll. Not recommended -- do yourself a favor and grab something from either the Cantillon or 3 Fonteinen line-up, or, if you really must insist on a sweetened lambic, then something from Lindemans.
