Hearing that the Chardon Brewworks was open I made my way there with few expectations. I was rewarded by two relatively solid beers. The first was this porter made with locally sourced maple syrup. It is not too heavy on the maple but might be a little light on the porter. I am willing to cut them slack for having just opened though. If they keep this up they’ll be very successful in a part of Ohio that doesn’t have many local options.

Aroma / Appearance - The deep brown body was the hue of watered down maple syrup seeping from the tree. A weak sandy head was all that was left in a glass filled almost to the brim. Chocolate, maple syrup, and hints of coffee give this a little richness. Somehow though the total presence is meager compared to the description given.

Flavor / Palate - Maple syrup, chocolate malt balls, and then sugar wash across the tongue. Sweet but not cloying this is thick without being chewy. Better than its relative from Ohio Brewing my only complaint might be the $5.00 cost for a pint. I’ve been so spoiled by local happy hours that having to pay full price takes getting used to. If they ever do growler fills of this I might have to buy one.

Sample at the Big Tap In on 04/21/2012. This beer is a dark brown color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt and maple. Medium body with flavors of toasty malt, maple and a bit of chocolate. The finish is sweet with a short maple and earth aftertaste. Decent overall.
