Launched in 2000 to celebrate the 500th birthday of emperor Charles V, who was born in Flanders. Tasted in its original form and in the renamed Keizer Karel Robijnrood form. Distantly related to the old Diesters bier, with which Haacht has a certain affinity. Creamy, light beige head and bronze colour; sweet smell of candi syrup, amaretto, chocolate, candied dates and raisins. Sweet and smooth taste, bit resinous, caramelly, body rather thin for a beer of this strenght, warm alcoholic finish. Never liked this very much but quite okay, for a Haacht brew.

330ml bottle. Charles Quint Goblet glass. Reddish brown color, ruby tints to the light & chill haze appearance. Off-white froth shows fairly good retention despite its high ABV. Caramel, grape, slight peppery, herbal & infusion aromas as well as solvent-like notes when it warms. Crispy & caramelized upfront. Medium to full body. Moderately high carbonation. Oily & silky palate. Fruity, sweet, marmalade –strawberry & apricot- flavors & low citric hoppiness. Long dried, sweet & slight bitter finish. Long fruity aftertaste, kind sugary & warming alcohol hues.

Nice dark beer with a caramel like taste. Aroma and looks are good, but could be better. Taste is very good, though not the best.

0.33L bottle. Pours a clear, deep red with a fluffy off white hea that lingers. Aromas of cough drop, dusty hop, alcohol, raspberry and cherry. Fairly sweet up front, hints of butterscotch and fruit. Finishes with some decent bittering hops to balance off the sugars with some warm alcohol and cloying sugars in the end. Full body with a nice, creamy mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, a fairly sugary, but tasty beer. It strikes a decent balance between malt and bittering hops, and has a noteworthy mouthfeel.

It does what it says on the tin this: it’s ruby red with a covering of off-white head and some good carbonation with a few flakes of sediment. It smells of red fruit jellies and fruit pastilles with a dash of sherbet, but for all that, the aroma doesn’t reek of sweetness. The carbonation is stronger than I expected in such a rich beer. Some good sweetness and twinges of raspberry and blackberry juiciness. It sits perched on the palate, a welcome guest, and lingers like the tasty little devil it is. A port-like finish that I thoroughly enjoyed.
