UPDATED: NOV 4, 2015 OK Strong Ale, frisk smag, meget mild, savner noget humle og fyld. Kedelig udseende, meget skum.

À la fois bonne mais sans grande surprise. Déjà, cela ressemble à s’y méprendre à une scotch ale. Du nez à la bouche : très caramelisee et fumée. En se calmant, on retrouve des notes plus boisées.

The foam is rough and fairly persistent, the flavor is a strange set of malt and hops without proper characteristics. The taste is just the same! Moderate but volatile malt tones of caramel mixes quickly with indefinite soft fruit. It is very difficult to maintain a certain theme in this beer. Hoppy bitterness is probably the best positive flavor remains. I miss the malt sweetness to dedicate to fruit, sugar or caramel. I miss a hop profile that is more pronounced or withdrawn. It is as if it won’t be neither malty or hoppy, but from the first tentative sip mixes it all together in a flavor composition that is difficult to separate. Belgian beer used to be much more nuanced, but here you have to look after the taste. Of course it is also an exciting challenge. Other ambrée from Belgium manages to do it, but this is slightly messy composed. This does not mean that it is bad and undrinkable, it’s just a bit messy in the whole.

Copenhagen 12/7 2015. 75 cl bottle from SuperBrugsen. Does not match the database perfectly as the alcohol percentage is noted as 8,5 % on the label and 9 % in the database. Nice picture of Keizer Karel on the label to give it some royal atmosphere. Pours dark reddish brown with off-white head. Settles as fat creamy layer of foam. Lots of lacing. Aroma is a little sharp. Some coffee and metallic notes of alcohol. Medium carbonation. Taste is sweet and of fermented fruit. Boozy aftertaste with some yeast and a little sourness. Decent but not unforgettable sweet Belgian.
