Dark brown color and a tan head. I got this on tap at Lop Lop in Brussels served in a stone mug with 4 handles – bonus points for appearance. Light nose, but pleasant. Big malt taste – caramelly and nutty. A little thinner than I wanted, though. Still quite good.

Ruby red color, short head. Malty aroma, bit sirupy like. Slightly alcoholic. Sweet roasted malty taste, slightly alcoholic, liquorice, sirupy. Bit bitter alcoholic palate. Belly-warming. I actually was expecting a triple, i don’t know for what reason...

This is definitely a macrobrew, and you really feel it has the character of a macro.

Ernest (5183) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 18, 2002
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is medium orange-brown, light density of small particles. Aroma is moderately yeasty (cobwebs, earth), moderately malty (toasted dark bread, nutty, cookie, roasted grain, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of banana, clove, cask wood, licorice, vanilla, orange, smoke, toffee, alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, moderately acidic. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. The aroma is absolutely incredible (reminds me very much of a [very complex] weizenbock, but with old/cobwebby Belgian yeast), but the sweetness is too big and tends to stick around too long...fatiguing. Well-hidden alcohol.

rauchbier (3205) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - JUN 21, 2002
Bottled. Deep chestnut red, good creamy head with nice lace and condition. Aromas of raisin fruit, toffee, malt and estery barley wine. More fruit and malt in the mouth with a hint of licorice and a kick from the alcohol. Soft malty and dry finish. Almost a Trappiste Lite.

Red-brownish, sweet, malty with a sal-amoniac liquorice flavour. There is a bitter harsh aftertaste.
