Dark brown, has a nice head with decent retention. Aroma is malty, woody. The flavor is not rich, has more of that woodiness with a little brown sugar. Mild bitterness. Mild sweetness. Boring, but not really a bad beer.

Carolina Beer Company--Charleston Brown Ale--2002 12 oz. Bottle. 5.70% ABV. 25 IBU’s. (4.25 / 5.0) Malt of the Earth Beer of the Month Club Selection. Creamy head and lace. Clear thin amber brown color. Malty tangy mild floral chocolate hop front. Creamy smooth light sweet toasted cocoa body. Dark wheat bread notes. Mild tangy end. Sampled 3/24/2003.

Draft. Pours deep brown with a tan head. Aroma was biscuity and yeasty, not very pleasant. Smooth roasty taste which made up a little on the aroma. I didn’t find this to be anything I would want to drink again.

Draught at Charlotte International Airport. Pours brown with an average, frothy, off-white, lasting head with good lacing. Aroma is average malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (herbs), average yeast (leather) with notes of toffee. Light bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

I tell you this... I have drank a few other brown ales. Sam adams, petes, cotton wood low down brown(good), & new castle. I rate charleston above all the above.

draught at Murphy’s Law Pub. Pours brown (duh), small white head. The nose is heavily nutty with smoked almonds up front.There’s a bit of caramel and coffee in there too. The beer is not so dense and the sweetness is not over bearing. Yeah, it sounds good, even as I type it, but the balance is off and some salty, veggie notes come out. Okay, I guess.

Enjoyed at the ’Pirate’s House’ in Savannah GA on draught. Fantastic malty, nutty, roasted initial flavor, then flavor disappears. Would have been one of my favorites if the flavor could have hung on a little longer.

From notes 5/17/03: Pours a deep dark russet brown color. Ruby highlights shine when held to the light. A tan head forms quickly then whithers away to a film in a short time. Moderate lacing occurred. Aromas were wonderful with a wealth of nut scents prevailing. Buttery malt aromas encased in a nut cloud. The taste is slick and buttery. Slippery (slightly roasted) malts followed by a nut flavor, and lastly a subtle hop kick. A little bit of a metallic taste towards the end, and especially as it warmed, but it wasn’t terribly detracting.

Dark with a big off white head. Tasted of toasted malts. Not much hops. Had some slight stout like qualities. Dark for a brown ale. Not bad.

Poured a translucent brown color with an ok head and lacingg that was ok. Aroma on this one was hard to pick up, maybe some toasted malts. The fflavor was an odd liquor type flavor in the front of everything (sorry, I don’t know my liquors, nor can I say this was high abv, but boy, it was liquor sweet and sharp). Bitter nuts picked up mid-glass and as it warmed some sweet type candy came out. Too strong of an odd liquor type flavor in this one to be great.

a great beer out of the draught. rich dark color with an off white head. rich carmel and toasty, almost taste like beef gravy, which is a plus for me.
