Clear deep ruby with a decent foamy beige head. Complex, unique aroma - anise, toffee malt, various fruits like apricot and plum, quite yeasty with a virtual miasma of sweet pungent spices blending with the malt, I got more apple character as it warmed. The taste was a little more straightforward, very thick sweet brown sugar malt, sweet spices, plentiful yeast, fruity but oddly no anise in the flavour - alcohol bitterness emerges in the finish. Nice thick body, sticky mouthfeel with an acceptable liveliness, slightly alcoholic and a hint of astringency from all the spice - a really good dubbel, nice and malty - one of the better brews of the tasting for my money.

The nose is distinct with aromatic herbs, spices and a bit of malted grain. The spices really rule in this brew, nearly all the dubbel character is hidden, cloves and mint leaves dominate the flavor set in a malt backdrop. The mouthfeel is silky with lively carbonation. The finish is long with lingering mint. Overall: It must have taken a lot of experimentation for the brewer to come up with this one, and they pulled it off. A winner. padrefan98 (643), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA Oct 5, 2008 Bottle shared by fordest at his house. Sweet carmel malt flavor with some spices and fruit. Interesting and very good.
